Seminary President: “There is Nothing Godly” About Saving Babies From Abortions
Life News ^ | November 2, 2021 | Micaiah Bilger

Abortion activists are attacking pro-life efforts in every way possible, including by twisting Christian teachings to claim that it’s acceptable to kill a unique, living unborn baby who is created in the image of God.

The Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, is one of them.

In a column at Salon, she slammed the Texas heartbeat law as “un-Christian” and claimed it’s pro-lifers who are distorting the Bible for “their political goals.”

“There is nothing godly about outlawing abortion — and Texas’ law is particularly un-Christian,” Jones began. “As a Christian biblical scholar, I see how conservatives are distorting our sacred text for their political goals.”

The Texas law, which prohibits abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable, has saved thousands of babies’ lives since it went into effect Sept. 1. But Jones completely ignored this, never mentioning how every abortion involves two lives, not just one.

The closest she came to mentioning it was when she attacked the “notion that life begins at conception [as] a very conservative, Christian idea.” Earlier, she also claimed that the “war on a woman’s right to choose” is not based in science.

“The government cannot legally impose this interpretation upon others, especially since other faiths directly contradict this belief,” Jones said.

She continued: “… many Republicans say that their Christian faith requires them to ban abortion. But it is clear to me that the Christian faith requires protecting the lives and well-being of women by allowing them reproductive freedom, not taking steps to eliminate it. In the Bible, God consistently tells us that all humans are moral agents, fully capable of making their own decisions.”

However, it is Jones’ argument for abortion that is not based in science or Christianity. The pro-life position is. Christianity always has taught that human beings are valuable because they are created in the image of God, that some “decisions” are sin and murdering innocent human beings is one of them.

“Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Bible recognizes unborn babies as valuable human beings in Luke 1:41, Genesis 25:21-22, Psalm 22:10-11 and other passages. Jesus placed great value on children when others in society did not in Matthew 19:14, and Proverbs 6:16-17 states that one of the things God hates most is the shedding of innocent blood. One of the ten commandments prohibits murder.

Science also backs up the belief. Biologically, it is well accepted that a living human being with his/her own unique DNA comes into existence at the moment of conception. Scientists, biology textbooks and other expert sources agree, and it is a reason why many non-religious people also believe abortion is wrong.

Jones claimed pro-life leaders and lawmakers are the ones who are “twisting and distorting our sacred text” to “crusade” against a woman’s “right to choose.” She even asserted that Christians only recently began opposing abortion and their reason for doing so came about through a political scheme by oppressive, racist Republicans to get votes.

But opposition to abortion has never been about politics and it is not recent, though the nation-wide legalization of the killing of unborn babies in abortions under Roe v. Wade certainly spurred more activism. Christians and other pro-lifers fight against abortion because they know that abortion is a violent, oppressive injustice against a defenseless child in the womb and every unborn baby deserves a right to life.

For those who are confused UTS’s sole purpose is to provide “Christian/seminary says (Insert random far left thing here)” headlines for the media. And its been this way for decades. So this is nothing new or surprising in the least.

Also in her resume is being “the Titus Street Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School and chair of gender, woman, and sexuality studies at Yale University” . . . whatever the latter is supposed to mean.

Rev. Dr. Serene Jones

As another post has stated, I see the problem

And she is going to be doubly smoking when she SEES those children she so blithely writes off. God the judge on one hand, her fake tokenism as a pastor blaspheming the Holy Spirit, and the children who never got their full potential as God wanted on the third side.

If by some miracle she is saved, she will definitely be smoking by the end of that meeting. (1 Cor 3:15)

“In the Bible, God consistently tells us that all humans are moral agents, fully capable of making their own decisions.””

Yes indeed, but God did not give humans the right to decide what is moral. That is a separate concept from making decisions.

Some ‘Reverend’ she’s just another godless feminist in clergy clothing who worships at the altar of women’s ‘rights’ to choose destroying innocent babies lives as their choice. Did she back up her position with any passages of scripture from her ‘sacred texts’? She’s a twister of truth and serving el Diablo instead.
