Pope Francis used a quartet of trios to launch the first phase of the synod on synodality, local meetings preparing for the regional, national, continental and hemispheric meetings that will lead up to the synod of bishops in October 2023.
On Saturday, in an address to the launch meeting for the elongated synod process, he spoke of three themes (communion, mission and participation), three risks (formalism, intellectualism, complacency) and three opportunities (structural change, listening, closeness).
In his Sunday homily, he added a fourth triplex formulation — encounter, listen and discern — to inaugurate what papal biographer Austen Ivereigh describes as the “biggest popular consultation in human history and a threshold moment for the global Catholic Church.”
It may well be. Or not.

“synod on synodality”
It just sounds like a bunch of navel gazing. Maybe it’s just ill-named, or maybe it sounds better in other languages or something. It sounds like corporate speak has infected the Church. I can see “collaborative collaboration” being used to “curate a plan” to “level set” the “synod on synodality.”
It just as silly as a “Vote on Voting” or a “Meeting about Meetings”.
I always enjoyed the pre-meeting meeting to set the agenda for the meeting. Of course, this was preceded by several emails about the agenda for said pre-meeting meeting, all coming from a guy who could just slightly raise his voice and talk with me from the office next door. I can’t figure out why that office of 7 total people was inefficient. I know we had several meetings about it. However, I can figure out why I left there.
