ROME – The Vatican’s top official for dialogue with Jews has attempted to smooth over a rift that opened last month when several prominent rabbis complained about a speech given by Pope Francis in which he said the Torah, meaning Jewish scripture and law, “does not give life.”
Swiss Cardinal Kurt Koch, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, in an effort to reduce tensions, sent letters to two rabbis representing groups that had public objected to the pope’s remarks. In the letters, Koch tried to explain the theological background of the papal comments and pointed to Francis’s favorable position toward the Jewish community.
The two identical letters, dated Sept. 3, were addressed to Rabbi Rasson Arussi, President of the Commission of the Grand Rabbinate of Israel for Dialogue with the Holy See, and Rabbi David Sandmel, President of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations.
Koch assured the rabbis that “in the Holy Father’s address, the Torah is not devalued, as he expressly affirms that Paul was not opposed to Mosaic law.”
“Paul observed this Law, emphasized its divine origin, and attributed to it a role in salvation history,” Koch said, insisting that the phrase, “The Law does not give life, it does not offer the fulfilment of the promise,” should not be taken out of its biblical context, “but must be considered within the overall framework of Pauline theology.”
While Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ offers a new way of salvation, this “does not mean that the Torah is diminished or no longer recognized as the ‘way of salvation for Jews,’” Koch said.

Bergoglio’s ultimate point was that the Ten Commandments etc. were non-binding, trumped by Jesus’ mercy which he (Bergoglio) freely regardless of whether or not the breaker of the said commandments is repentant or even agrees that his action was sinful. Papal interlocutor Scalfari understood Bergoglio quite well when he declared a few years back that the latter was abolishing the concept of sin.
God bless Bergoglio’s Jewish critics, but they should understand that they’re not his actual target. And they’re missing the point if they think he’s putting them down. He isn’t. His intended target is Christian teaching on sexual morality. Any Jewish hurt feelings are simply unintended collateral damage.
Koch, Bergoglio and Barron are all heretics if they believe this.
Torah bad, Pachamama good. This imbecile in a nut shell. No POTUS, no POPE, Western Civ’s in great shape.
If Bergoglio targets Christians, he also targets Jews. It is the one law, particularly since the Torah happens to be the first five books of the Christian Bible too.
Of course we all know that Jesus said “No one comes to the Father except through me and the Torah”, right?
“I did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it,” Jesus said.
And fulfill it he did, being the only fully sinless man, and became the perfect Lamb of God, who took away the sins of the world.
It takes an atheist to know an atheist, Murph.
Swiss Cardinal Kurt Koch is wasting his time writing to Jewish leaders and defending Bishop Bergoglio, the unethical, heretical and vicious freak at The Vatican. Prayers for Pope Benedict XVI who is the center of the greatest drama on earth and is protecting the Church from people like Koch, Bergoglio, etc.
Bergoglio is as mixed up as Bishop Barron, Murph. If atheists and Jews can go to Heaven, why did Christ establish His Church?
Stop asking me the same damn question over and over.
I don’t know who is going to Hell. Only God does. (Well maybe you and Barron are also privy to God’s omniscience).
Pass that along to your heretic hero, Bobby Barron. He can stop "daring to hope" that Hell is empty.
21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'LORD, LORD,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, 'LORD, LORD, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?'
23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."
It is strongly implied here that even Christians (who "drive out demons" and "perform many miracles" in Christ's name) will not have eternal life who do not - additionally - do the will of the Lord.
It is not enough to hear Christ's words - one must also put them into practice!
Question: Do Jews fulfill these TWO criteria?
Regards,
I find it interesting that Jews always demand that Christians affirm the ongoing validity of Judaism but they will not affirm the validity of Christianity. We have different beliefs; live with it.
Certainly not Christian Jews - and there are many.
I wish these rabbis were as quick to scold the Vatican for the “documentary hypothesis” and the notion that the Torah is mythology.
If you can earn salvation through the law then why did we need a savior? This is the “dual covenant” theology like John Hagee preaches and it goes against everything Paul (and Peter) taught.
