I'd guess something closer to palm olive, both palms and olives are quite common in the Middle East.
Either way, washing someone's feet back then was different than today.
Back then the roads, far from being paved with gold, were paved with sh!t. Every horse, donkey, ox, or camel moving good on the road didn't stop at a rest stop to 'take care of business' the droppings and urine were deposited on the go.
And the people? They walked everywhere they went, sometimes in sandals, often barefoot.
