[Catholic Caucus] DC Pontifical Mass: CANCELED

A pontifical high Mass had been planned for 14 August in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.  It was actually supposed to be offered a year ago, but was postponed due to COVID restrictions.  The music was all set.  The clergy were all lined up.  EWTN was going to air it live.

Following Pope Francis' motu proprio attacking the traditional Latin Mass and placing massive restrictions on Catholics who worship using the old books, Cardinal Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Washington, demanded the celebrant of the planned 14 August Mass -- Archbishop Thomas Gullickson -- submit a formal request for permission.  Mind you, all permissions had already been attained prior to the motu proprio.  The organizers and funders of the Mass, the Paulus Institute for the Propagation of Sacred Liturgy, had been working with shrine and chancery staff, even in the past few days, on liturgical and logistical details, including rehearsal times.

Today, Archbishop Gullickson received a reply from Cardinal Gregory.  Permission:  denied.

The pontifical high Mass, which had been planned for well over a year, with numerous Catholics from around the country planning to be in attendance in the largest church in North America, has been canceled 18 days before it was to be offered.

The Catholic hierarchy seems to despise devout Catholics.

They seem to despise God, Himself, and replace Him with Francis’ “humanism”.

Wilting Gregory demanded a formal request for permission from an archbishop, just so he could deny it?!

Well, I learned something tonight watching last night’s Jeopardy game. It surprised me that I did not know this, or realize it. Pope Francis is the first pope who is a Jesuit. They also said the Jesuits were banned by one of the Clements (sorry don’t remember which one).

Too bad they were allowed back, and I’m curious about this but too fed up to find out more.

This man is single handedly destroying the RC Church. He makes Joe Biden look like a fine fellow.

It’s so bad what is happening in this world, it is like THE ENTIRE GLOBAL ELITE has united against all NORMAL PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.

Do they really think they are going to kill us all, and then do what, just live with the lowest of the low as their slaves? Because I’m starting to think this is what they want.

The good old days, pre the Bourgoisie. (Can’t spell French so sorry if that’s wrong.)

Heartbreaking for the good people who were working on this Mass and/or planning to attend, but unsurprising. Gregory wouldn’t have gotten the D.C. if he weren’t considered a reliable toady for Team Francis.

It’s called “clericalism”.

Ironically, the Jesuits in Argentina, left, right and center, all hated Bergoglio, not for his politics but for his nasty personality and divisiveness. The Superior General of the order supposedly begged JP2 not to make the man a bishop. And an unnamed prominent Jesuit was quoted in Newsweek in 2014 as saying that Bergoglio would be a “catastrophe” as pope.

Would you say this is also an insult to Our Lady, the mass being the Feast of the Assumption? For that reason alone it should be allowed to go on.

Kim (/jk)

Seriously, a question from ignorance: does a pontifical Mass require a pontiff?

Yes, the Jesuits shoved him off to obscurity at that school, and Bergolio’s apparent humility and dedication supposedly impressed JP. Ironically, the Jesuits made Bergoglio look good.

My old bishop, Bishop Seratelli, would celebrate a High Pontifical Mass, every year. He has since retired and don’t believe everything voris writes in church militant is true.

I consider the Roman Catholic Church my spiritual home, having made all of my sacraments there, but I stopped going to mass years ago.
I have been thinking about returning, but with this current Pope, I will NOT go back.

...., but with this current Pope, I will NOT go back.

If you truly believed in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and the re-presentation of his Sacrifice in the Mass... you would not be making such a silly statement...

Would not like to have your last sacrament, Extreme Unction, in the Catholic Church?
