VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis will skip a Mass on Sunday that he had been scheduled to say before his recent surgery, but the Vatican said there was no cause for alarm and that it was part of normal convalescence.

The Vatican said the pope will go ahead with his Sunday noon prayer but that a Mass for the Catholic Church day to pay homage to the elderly and grandparents will be said instead by Archbishop Rino Fisichella.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said it was part of “normal convalescence.” Saying the Mass, which had been scheduled months ago, would have meant wearing vestments and alternating between walking, sitting and standing for about two hours.

I suspect there’s a reason that “Traditiones Custodes” went into effect immediately and didn’t have the usual legal grace period.

This Sunday will be 21 days post Francis’s surgery.

Something is fishy.

Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass right through his Parkinson’s.

He got rid of the traditional latin mass and now he's working on getting rid of mass altogether.

Who can prove me wrong given his continued heretical behavior?

I noticed they didn't mention any kneeling or genuflecting during Bergoglio's Mass.

The only times I've seen him kneel was to wash muslims' and women's feet on Holy Thursdays or to kiss the shoes of politicians.

I think it was because he wanted the element of surprise, not because he’s about to die. I also think he’s probably very unhappy that the bishops, especially in the US, said no way. They basically told him to hold his horses, not out of any respect for the TLM, but because they were extremely PO’d by his abrupt, dictatorial order.

Even the FOFs (Friends of Francis) such as Cupich didn’t want to be pushed around.

Don’t get your hopes up about his imminent departure, though, because it’s probably not going to happen. That said, I think this stupid, arrogant move on his part has cost him a lot of supporters, even those on his side ideologically, and this may be the bridge too far for ordinary on-the-ground Catholics.

There was no suprise. Everybody knew it was coming (almost to the week), just not how severe the whipping would be.

It's like young children, waiting for their drunkard father to come back from the bar at night.

"How bad will he beat us tonight", they wonder.

I don’t hope for ill health for anyone, including people I dislike. But I do know that he stayed in the hospital approximately 3 days longer than they initially said he would. And now he’s shying away from celebrating public masses.

I also know from the experience of elderly family members that major surgery at 84 ain’t a walk in the park. I also know that the Vatican often lies shamelessly. There’s a joke that the pope is alway in wonderful health until he dies... and even for a few days after that.

If they had put a 90-day grace period into Traditionis Custodes, and he failed to survive until the end of the period, the motu proprio would be null and void.

The surgery may have weakened him, and he also has the fatigue and aches and pains of just being old. But all that doesn’t mean he won’t live into his 90’s!
