A Sensitivity to Sin - Devotional
GracetoYou.org ^ | 1997 | John MacArthur, Grace Community Church

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us” (1 John 1:6-10).

True believers are sensitive to their sin and confess it.

Throughout Scripture, light is used as a metaphor for truth—both intellectual and moral truth (cf. Ps. 119:105, 130; Prov. 6:23). When the apostle John writes, “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5), he is stating that the Lord is absolutely sinless since light and darkness cannot coexist.

Some claim to have fellowship with God (v. 6), to have no sin (v. 8), and even to have never sinned (v. 10). But they are living in darkness; it is characteristic of unbelievers to be oblivious to the sins in their lives. But that is not true of genuine believers. They have a right sense of sin: they “walk in the light as He Himself is in the light” (v. 7), and they “confess [their] sins” (v. 9). True believers know that if they want to commune with God, they need to confess their sins and turn to Christ as their “Advocate” before God (2:1).

The apostle Paul was very sensitive to the sinful realities of his life (Rom. 7:14-25). What about you? Are you aware of the spiritual battle raging within you? Do you realize you must live a holy life to have fellowship with God? Are you willing to confess and forsake any sin in your life? Do you realize you can choose not to sin? Are you weary of doing battle with the sin in your life (cf. Rom. 7:24)? If these things are true of you, rejoice in the assurance of your salvation.

Suggestions for Prayer

Confess any known sin to God right now, then forsake it.

For Further Study

Read Romans 7:14-25.

Make a list of all the ways Paul was sensitive to his sin. How many of those can you relate to? How should you respond?

I was watching a Justin Peters video. He was exposing the word of faith movement. (Kundalini, name it claim it, prosperity gospel) He doesn’t have much time for them, and neither do I. He had a video clip of either Joyce Meyer, or Beth Moore, claiming to be sinless. He had another clip of Jesse Duplantis, claiming God asks him for his opinion. Unbelievable. Just plain, flat out false doctrine. How do these false teachers sleep at night?

Sounds interesting.

Here’s another one.....

KUNDALINI WARNING - Full Documentary - ALL PARTS - Shocking - Andrew Strom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXolizIy6_g

He also wrote a book which complements the video nicely.

It covers the same basic material but in the book, he cites the sources, and the video is nice because actually seeing the video clips has more of an impact than simply describing it as the book does. It’s not as horrifying to read it as to see it.

A most excellent post, my brother.

It’s called “delusion.” And I’m sure they sleep well. Why? Because when truly saved people sin, they’re on their knees for all hours of the night and then crying/depressed for days after committing a sin. I HATE when I have to ask forgiveness for a sin because it seems to me that it is all done in rebellion to God. Or, let me rather say that is so on my part. To then have to ask forgiveness for rebellion is almost too painful.

I don’t for a second believe the people you mentioned worry about sin, as they believe they’re perfect already.

I KNOW I’m not.

I will find it. Since he has a bunch of videos, it might take some time.

Actually, the sinless claim and Jesse Duplantis claiming he counsels God, are probably two different videos, but I will do my best to find them.

You forgot an important one:

““Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” — for they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’” (Mark 3:28–30)

For someone to ask continual forgiveness of a sin knowing they will do it again and again on purpose, is a blasphemy of the holy spirit and that sin will not be forgiven. So saying you are forgiven for sins you are going to repeat is a lie. This a favorite of the LGBTQ community that tries to profess being relieved of their sin.

That’s funny. Someone thinking they’re counseling God.

I wonder if God doesn’t let them go on and on so that new Christians can learn right from left, so to speak, in having to “search the Scriptures daily to see if these things be so.” (Quote from memory, please forgive any errors.) The people on the stage certainly aren’t guilty of it.

I lean towards the classic interpretation that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is saying that He is the devil.

Such a person can never receive forgiveness because they, believing it’s the devil, will never submit to the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Not to mention that calling the Holy Spirit *Satan* is bad enough.

Ever wonder if a particular thing in your life is sin? We all do it, I think. We all question things we do or even think about.

Gonna share something that Bro. J. Vernon McGee once told. (I will mix up the locations, I’m sure, so please forgive it.)

When he got his wife moved from Georgia to Texas, she was blown away by the fact that men and women swam in the same pool together and that you could NOT smoke in the church office.

Seems funny now, but having come from her time it’s certainly understandable. While I believe we should endeavor to be sinless, I realize that, as Bro. McGee stated, some things are simply social restraints we’ve placed on our selves and then think we’re godly because we do or don’t do certain thing. (I think I got very close to what he said.)

This I know for sure, the only righteousness or holiness I have now or will ever have is that which I have in Christ Jesus my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Lord and King Jesus.

It’s good to not confuse social convention with actual true sin.

There’s a lot to be said for learning to relax about things that are not morally wrong, but just a matter of social convention or preference.

Someone else is not sinning when they do something I just don’t like.

A friend with kids a bit older than mine, gave me the best advice about the teen years. It was *Pick your mountains to die on.*

If you make a big deal about everything, then when it really counts, the kids won’t listen to you. So I figured that what really counts is moral issues. So I didn’t lose any sleep when they went off the deep end with their music.

But I did about things that God calls sin.

If i make the mistake of aptting myself onthe back for resisting some temptation, I am quickly reminded that there is zero righteousness without His Life abiding in our born again spirit, so I don’t deserve any praise, He is due it all. As McGee’s song said ‘Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe.’ You folks have touched upon one of the underlying themes of that short story, m’Lady.

Ok MM, here is the Justin Peters video, where Jesse Duplantis says God asks him for advice. It’s around the 43rd minute. I have to admit, I was stunned when I heard it.

https://youtu.be/kOTrMSOrYew

I am still looking for that other one, though this video says enough, by itself.
