Catholics must know how Peter's Pence is spent, Vatican official says

The head of the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy said he hopes efforts at financial transparency and reform will foster Catholics' trust ahead of the annual Peter's Pence collection.

In an interview with Vatican News June 25, Jesuit Father Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves, prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, said Catholics "have the right to know how we spend the money given to us."

"Sometimes contradictions arise from a lack of knowledge, which, in turn, comes from a lack of transparency," Father Guerrero said.

Peter's Pence is a papal fund used for charity, but also to support the running of the Roman Curia and Vatican embassies around the world. The collection for the fund occurs each year around June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

However, several reports in recent years have alleged that only a small portion of the money received annually was used for charity while the majority of the contributions were used to fill the gap in the Vatican's administrative budget.

More recently, in September, questions arose as to whether funds from the Peter's Pence collection were used to finance the Vatican Secretariat of State's purchase of a majority stake in a property in London's Chelsea district, a purchase which incurred major debts.

"Father Guerrero said it also is important to understand that the pope's "mission of unity in charity" includes the work of the offices of the Roman Curia and nunciatures around the world, which also are supported by Peter's Pence."

I’ve often wondered if Peter’s Basilica in Rome has a sign saying, “The funding for this building half a millennia ago from people paying to bypass purgatory was the final straw that led to a huge split from the Roman Catholic Church. It’s called the Protestant Reformation.”

They don’t need a sign; Catholics have been learning quite a bit over the last couple of decades as to where the money is spent, and they aren’t happy.

I’m shocked anyone gives at all.

Yes, but the faithful see the false church they bought and don’t bother showing up anymore.

Fear of not making it to Heaven if a Priest has not given you Final Rites.

Fear of being mocked from the pulpit in the congregation as being part of an ‘uncaring and uncharitable’ congregation.

Fear of the rules of the soul being changed mid-horse-race.

The Catholics aren’t called ‘The Fearful Catholics,’ for nothing.

And, yes, I say this as a prior Catholic. I grew up seeing and hearing this stuff. And it’s a WHOLE LOT WORSE than any ‘practicing’ Catholic is willing to admit.

It’s like the old Russians who survived under the USSR; they believe since they survived the misery the next generation wasn’t entitled to be free of misery.

Insanity. Legal insanity.

Thanks for the reminder on this one. I like my pastor, but he has an unfortunate habit of often failing to identify the beneficiary(ies) of the 2nd collection. But for the heads up here, I might have mistakenly tossed a few dollars in the basket for Bergoglio and his deplorable minions. I’ll be proudly sitting on my hands this Sunday.
