The apostolic nunciature in Germany has announced that Pope Francis has ordered an investigation into the Archdiocese of Cologne in order to shed more light on how sex abuse cases were handled or mishandled the past four decades.
In a statement on May 28, the nunciature said the pope has entrusted the "apostolic visitation", as the inquiry is called, to Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Stockholm and Bishop Johannes van den Hende of Rotterdam, president of the Bishops' Conference of the Netherlands.
The visitation is scheduled to get underway in the first half of June.
