Large-scale restoration is underway at the famous flooded bell tower in Kalyazin, Russia.
The work is already about a quarter completed. When all is said and done, there will be a fortified coastline and well-equipped pier at the bell tower of the former St. Nicholas Cathedral, reports the administration of the Tver Province.
“The bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral is known far beyond the borders of Russia. This object is interesting for tourists and historians, a significant symbol of the spiritual heritage of the Tver Province. It is important to preserve this unique structure for future generations,” said Governor Igor Rudenya while inspecting the site last week.
The project won the All-Russian Competition for the Best Projects for Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment in Small Towns and Historical Settlements last year, for which the municipality received a federal grant of $680,000 (50 million rubles).
During the restoration, the foundation and walls of the bell tower will be strengthened, and the brickwork, facades, truss system, roof, floors and stairs will be updated.

I find it fascinating when I hear about entire towns being submerged to make way for a reservoir. There is one under Roosevelt Lake, not too far from where I live.
Petersburg Georgia North of Augusta Georgia and was submerged under Clark Hill or Strom Thurmond lake when the Clark’s Hillor Strom Thurmond dam was complete,. Petersberg was a contender for Capital of Georgia and a was a thriving community . It is a great dive site.
I bet. I’m guessing most submerged towns would be like time capsules.
