Leaked letter and individual interviews suggest there may have been more than 78 who lost their lives.
Scores of priests have been massacred in the Tigray area of Ethiopia, according to a letter purportedly sent by Church officials there.
The Telegraph claims to have a copy of the letter, which was sent to the Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and leaked to the British newspaper. The letter says that “priests, deacons, choristers, and monks” have been “massacred” over the last five months.
“Half a dozen survivors confirmed the news to this newspaper and said that both Ethiopian national army soldiers and Eritrean troops went into their holy spaces across southeast Tigray and ‘shot them down,’” said the Telegraph.
Last November, fighting broke out in Tigray after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent in federal troops, supported by militia and army from Amhara, as well as troops from Eritrea, to fight the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which he accused of holding illegitimate elections.
Several days ago, a video was smuggled out of Ethiopia showing Abune Mathias, patriarch of Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church, condemning what he calls a “genocide” being committed on the ethnic Tigrayan people by the Ethiopian state.

How long before liberals blame Israel for this too? Israel gets blamed for islamic terrorists bombing Israel so may as well blame them for this too.
Why do people still hate the priests after the church has been a leftist and progressive as possible, even against their own principles and traditions. It’s like their outreach program isn’t working out something. Oh, well, better double down on the liberalism.
This is just another chapter in the long playing Tigre Amharic boogie. Let the good times roll for the natives.
In other words... don’t believe everything you hear, especially if it sounds like the same kind of claims as frequently made by the marxist Hamas Palistians against Israel.
Any group called “The People’s Liberation Front..” is going to be the sort of group that commits atrocities and then blames its opponent for its own deeds. And they’re not above forcing a captive official to make any plea they want.
Stay out of Ethiopia. Stay out of africa... Stay out of detroit...
Orthodox Christians from Ethiopia should feel right at home on FR. They tend to be solidly conservative on social issues such as homosexuality and abortion and have endured persecution--from the Communist Derg regime (1974-1991) to the Muslim gangs who are burning their churches today.

A Nobel peace prize nominee has accused the director-general of the World Health Organisation of allegedly aiding genocide in Ethiopia.
American economist David Steinman accused WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 55, of being a ‘crucial decision maker’ who directed Ethiopia’s security forces actions from 2013 to 2015.
He accused Tedros of being one of three officials who were in charge of the security services over that period, during which the ‘killing’ and ‘torturing’ of Ethiopians took place.
Tedros was the country’s foreign minister until 2016 when his Tigray People’s Liberation Front party was in power. Raised in Tigray, he also served as Ethiopia’s health minister from 2005 to 2012 before being elected WHO director-general in 2017, the first African to take the role.
Mr Steinman, who was nominated for the 2019 Nobel peace prize, lodged the complaint calling for Tedros to be prosecuted for genocide at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
He claimed that Tedros ‘was a crucial decision maker in relation to security service actions that included killing, arbitrarily detaining and torturing Ethopians,’ according to The Times.
