Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 51

Psalm 51[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

David wrote this beautiful Song of Repentance after his affair with Bathsheba. As I presented a few weeks ago, David didn't just break ONE Commandment with this sin, but managed to break all TEN of them in the process. The covetousness led to adultery, the adultery led to lying, the lying led to stealing and murder, and all the way through, David's sin led to dishonoring his family and his God. David hit the Jackpot with this sin.

And here is the kicker: David was ALREADY a Believer when he did all of this sinning. This flies in the face of some teaching that Believers are always "Paragons of Virtue". The Truth is that Believers DO fall, but God doesn't leave them in the pit. He has provided a Way of Forgiveness, Healing, and Restoration.

God blessed David with a wise and compassionate counselor named Nathan. On more than one occasion, Nathan was there to straighten David out, and he did it with STORIES. When David stole Bathsheba from one of his trusted Generals, the result was a pregnancy, and the subsequent death of the child. David, even in mourning, did not recognize the consequences of his sin until Nathan told him a Story about a little ewe lamb, the only possession of a poor man, which was stolen by a king who already had a whole flock. When David was enraged by the injustice, Nathan pointed out that HE (David) was the wicked man who had stolen the lamb. The result was sincere Repentance, Forgiveness, and Restoration. Bathsheba became pregnant again, and the son that was born was named Solomon.

In this Prayer, David bares his soul for all to see. He asks God to "Restore the Joy of his Salvation." He doesn't pray "Save Me AGAIN!", but instead prays for the sweet fellowship with God that he once knew before the sordid affair.

Sin has consequences. David's first child with Bathsheba was NOT healed, or even raised from the dead. Another consequence of sin was that David's dream of building a Temple was not to be his because he shed too much blood. When we sin, there are some things that won't change, even when we try to make restitution. Murder victims stay murdered, destroyed lives may remain destroyed, and hurt people often stay hurt. We can try to ask forgiveness from "The World", but it is unlikely that we will get it.

God is different from the World. When a sinner truly repents, there is Joy in Heaven. God ALWAYS forgives and throws the sin into the Sea of Forgetfulness (and posted a "NO FISHING" sign!). With Forgiveness is the Restoration of the Joy of Salvation. And, as the Story of David and Bathsheba has shown us, no sin is too big for God to forgive.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

Psalm 53

To the leader: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.

1 Fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt, they commit abominable acts;
there is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.

3 They have all fallen away, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.

4 Have they no knowledge, those evildoers,
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not call upon God?

5 There they shall be in great terror,
in terror such as has not been.
For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly;*
they will be put to shame,* for God has rejected them.

6 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

I am praising God currently for just this same sort of repentance!

For years I have been "bedevilled" by the same sin. Repeatedly, God has confronted and challenged me about it.

I progressed through the standard routine: first, stopping ("Go, and sin no more"); then, pleading ("Help me, God!"). He forced me to admit my utter helplessness.

Turns out, He wanted me to get real. There was a thought that I had which was what I was acting on, and He wanted me to see it clearly. Such a thought might lie at the root of any of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Avarice, Greed, Sloth.

Once I finally recognized IT, I simply asked Him to remove it, AND HE DID.

You’re right. . .one thing does lead to another. It’s better to start on God’s premises.
