I’ve never heard of it either until this piece of work started using it.
What is complementarianism?
Answer: Complementarianism is the teaching that masculinity and femininity are ordained by God and that men and women are created to complement, or complete, each other. Complementarians believe that the gender roles found in the Bible are purposeful and meaningful distinctions that, when applied in the home and church, promote the spiritual health of both men and women. Embracing the divinely ordained roles of men and women furthers the ministry of God’s people and allows men and women to reach their God-given potential.

Thanks. So, I don’t see the controversy. What would be the complaint about that?
As a Christian woman I don’t have a problem accepting complementarianism teaching as Biblical. I do not consider it a “salvific” or primary doctrine of the faith, though. Where I see the problem is when men take it too far and refuse to even hear what a woman has to say on religious topics - as if a woman cannot possibly teach them anything. I’ve run into that on Religion Forum threads here on Free Republic! It can get pretty silly.
