That’s what I found the scariest. That’s also what suggests we’re not talking about a medical condition here, but something more closely resembling mass hysteria.
Adolescents going through puberty, whether male or female, are typically confused and anxious, and generally full of self-doubt as well as confusion. Couple that with some psychiatric problem, like depression or an eating disorder, even at a mild level, and you’ve got kids looking for a way out. And many of them find it by assuming they’re the wrong gender - if they could just live in their “true” identity, all would be fine. Couple that with an attitude toward the transgender among the intelligentsia that makes that condition fashionable, and that approach starts to look like their escape from their problems as adolescents.
Until (for many, maybe most) they do proceed along that path, and find they’re no better off than they were before, and reality smacks them good and hard. Hopefully they haven’t mutilated themselves or chemically castrated themselves by then.

The girls wanting to be boys is almost primarily western cultures, and mostly upper-middle class and above, and mostly white girls. It is very much like a cult.

The above video is about a girl that transitioned to be a boy, and now has detransitioned. She lives in Sweden. It is a really good documentary and shows both the idiocy of the medical “profession” and the hope that there is a life beyond for these kids. She is a very brave and strong person to open herself for this documentary.
Sadly, many of them, when they finally realize that transitioning wasn’t the answer to their problems they resort to suicide.
The first GOP legislator who sponsors a bill to force schools to have state- and/or federally-funded "Detransition" offices will have hit an out-of-the-park home run.
In the legislative run-up, trot out a parade of former trans people (literally, hundreds of thousands) who wanted Detransition access in schools but could not get it.
Force Democrats to go on record and vote against it, denying detransition funds to the same people that they only want taking these chemicals, because it's only a one-way street to them -- if they permit Leftists to detransition, why, they might revert to normal and vote GOP. Even vote Trump!

Prescribing sex-change hormones for a child that has existing medical issues should be a criminal act of the first degree felony. These children are not able to provide informed consent and medicating them could be viewed as an act of hostility towards both the child and the parent.
