Fundamentalist protestants like J.D. Greear don't give a hoot what the Pope says about anything, and has stated so publicly on numerous occasions. But if they were interested in "following his lead", they can start with last week's statement from the Vatican that same sex marriage is sinful and cannot be blessed by pastors under any circumstances:

The Pope is not supposed to have a say in the SBC. It is supposedly made up of individual independent Churches. If the leadership refuses to get rid of the heretics, the Churches need to rid themselves from the SBC.
