Men opted to be flogged in public in Aceh province to avoid a prison sentence

Three Christians were flogged in public in Indonesia’s Aceh province on Feb. 8 after being caught drinking alcohol at a small shop in the provincial capital Banda Aceh, according to a local government official.

Heru Triwijanarko, acting head of the Banda Aceh public order agency and Sharia police, said the three unnamed men received 40 strokes of the cane for violating bylaws prohibiting alcohol.

It was not clear whether any of the men were Catholic.

“They were all given the choice of a prison sentence or caning, and all chose to be caned,” he said.

The conservative province is the only area in the country allowed to implement Sharia-based bylaws.

They stipulate that violators must be given the option of being tried in a Sharia court or in a regular criminal court using Indonesia’s national penal code. However, if the offense does not fall under the penal code, even non-Muslim violators can be tried under Sharia law.

One of the caned Christians said he chose to be flogged to avoid a prison sentence of up to six months.

“I would have had to stay behind bars for a long time. I thought it better to get it over and done with,” he said, adding he would not wish to go through it again.

Each stroke was excruciating,” local news portal sindonews.com reported him a saying.

Reverend Jacklevyn Frits Manuputty, general secretary of the Jakarta-based Communion of Churches in Indonesia, called the flogging regrettable.

lots to unpack here...but I must say - this is a pretty bold display of moral authority in these modern times.

Indonesia’s not too bad if you stay out of Ache.
Ache is the center for growing marijuana which is completely illegal there. They’ll cane you for just about anything.

I worked in Iraq with 2 Indian men- Rajesh, and Raejean.

According to Raejean, he got caught selling liquor to fellow construction workers in Dubai. He made about $250 a month doing construction labor work, and the company charged him (and everyone else) about $200 for expenses a month, so the workers were in essence (borderline) slaves, and definitely indentured.

He made about $700 a month selling liquor so it was way more profitable for him to do that, than work for the paltry construction wages that he did.

Once caught, he was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 30 days in jail, 30 lashes by caning, and deportation back to India.

When I met him, he was making about $600 a month working a construction job in Iraq. He told me that to get a job like his, he had to pay $3,500 US, to an Indian job broker.

He signed on as a carpenter... he told me that back in India, his job/business was to deliver clean water to homes in his village. He had a little motorized 3 wheeler for the transportation aspects. He was a good man and I wish that I had kept up with his whereabouts.
