PORTLAND, Maine — Three families demanding that the state pay tuition for religious schools are taking their appeal to a U.S. Supreme Court that looks much different than when the lawsuit was filed more than two years ago.
The conservative shift of the U.S. Supreme Court and a ruling in a Montana case make attorneys for the Maine families more optimistic that they’ll prevail in changing the state’s stance, which dates to 1980. The Supreme Court will decide whether to hear the appeal, filed Thursday.
“The court should grant this case and resolve this issue once and for all,” said the families’ attorney, Michael Bindas, from the Institute for Justice.
The Maine Department of Education currently allows families who reside in towns without their own public schools to receive tuition to attend a public or private school of their choice. But religious schools are excluded.

Why go to a middleman to decide this, with SCOTUS.
Just appeal to the SCOTUS equivalent in Beijing.
The rain in Maine falls mainly in ol’ Blaine
SCOTUS - RGB + ACB = win for religious schools
wow. this thread got weird fast.
Well, now you know where to buy real estate in Maine.
Private schools to can’t keep themselves open with paid tuition have a failed business model.
That’s what I’m afraid of. This doesn’t look like a voucher - it looks like a direct payment.
Not sure this particular case is a good thing.
Wouldn’t it be better for these parents to NOT have to pay school/property taxes and use the money instead on tuition for their child? It is unfair that parents have to pay twice (taxes and tuition) to send their kids to a religious school.

I wouldn’t bet on it.
have to agree. Once government gets it’s nose under the tent, it won’t be long before it’s inside the tent with you. All government money comes with strings (more like mooring cables) attached. Private, faith based schools should avoid government money at all costs.

They are not paying taxes for schools as these towns have no schools.
Oops, my bad, thanks.
