Revelation 6

The Seals

6 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

Bless the LORD, Oh My Soul,
and Let All That is Within Me Bless His Most Holy Name!
Abba Father,
Blessed Are You,
Oh LORD, Our God!
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
Rock of All Ages!
It is You, and You Alone,
Who Created All Things,
And You Alone Who Knows The End from The Beginning,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The artwork for this particular Passage of Scripture spans Two Millennia, and is very powerful. Images of the Seven Seals and the Four Horsemen have been portrayed in Sculpture, Painting, Film, and CGI. Even people who don't know the Bible know about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

But the thing that most of these artists leave out is the One Who opens the Seals and summons the Horsemen to do His bidding. All the Power, Glory, Thunder, Majesty, and Wrath comes not from the Horses, not from the Horsemen, and not from the Catastrophes that they Horsemen represent. It is all from One Source, and everything is held together and set forth by HIS command. He is the Ruler of all things, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the Sun of Righteousness. He is The Lamb Slain From the Foundation of the Earth, The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, The First and the Last, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And He shall reign Forever and Ever.

I'll say! Is some of it DeviantArt? To me, it has that look.

Our pastor is preaching through Revelation currently, and Sunday we covered Chapter 6, so I'm running with you stride-for-stride. And you nailed it by keeping the focus clearly on the Christ, leaving the horse-riding AntiChrist in his subordinate and very temporary place. Jesus has a horse, too.

As a USC alum, I cannot help mentioning Notre Dame's Four Horsemen, their 1924 backfield:

The snow turned into slush, and then into rain, and now is so icy that it is impossible even to walk the dog.

Black ice with running water over it. Not even spikes or cleats are effective against it. Penny refuses to go out in it. It is so bad that I actually wish it had been snow, which at least can be shoveled. YIKES!

Yes, some of the pics are from “Deviant Art”, from which I have gleaned many illustrations over the years. (((Unfortunate Title for the Site, Though!)))

What I like is that a number of these pictures show the “Pale Horse” in GREEN, which agrees with the Greek Word for the color. (χλωρός ) pronounced “Cloros”, we get the words Chlorophyll, chlorine, and Clorox from this word. It also can mean “Tender” or “new” as a “Green recruit” or a “Greenhorn”, and so was translated “Pale” by early translators of the Bible. It seemed to make more sense than a green horse.

And yet, in our modern times, the color green has been associated both with the climate-change movement and with Islam, so the harbinger of death on a green horse makes more sense.

Back in the seventies, the “ecology” movement adopted a green flag with the Greek Letter Theta in the canton. Theta is the first letter in the Greek word “thanatos” which means DEATH.

So, were the designers of that flag saying that “We’re all gonna die!!!” or were they calling for the DEATH of human beings, whom they consider a contagion on “Mother Earth”?

Just some random musings on my part.

Oh my! That sounds like the ice around here at this altitude it stays til May! Poor Penny! Our dog Charlie must of had a bad wipe out on the stairs coming up to our door, because he hesitates on each step and it take him an hour to get up the 7 steps!
