Revelation 5

The Scroll and the Lamb

5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[a] of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll

    and to open its seals,

because you were slain,

    and with your blood you purchased for God

    persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,

    and they will reign[b] on the earth.”

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,

    to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength

    and honor and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

    be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the years when PAC-Man was considered the cutting edge of Computer Graphics, I attempted to do a painting of this scene from Revelation. It was done in Acrylics, to which no amount of gloss medium was too much to create the illusion of light. Nevertheless, the painting was awful, and I destroyed it. How could I possibly capture John's Vision?

Now, with Computer Graphics, artists are painting WITH light. They have all kinds of tools at their disposal to replicate figures so that the angels and saints appear in the thousands, and perfect measurements for complicated perspective and depth of field. And guess what. They STILL fall short.

The Central Figure in this scene is perhaps the most difficult to portray. How does one paint a Lamb that has been slain, but is ALIVE and the Embodiment of Power and Glory? A mere human artist can either come up with a dead Lamb or a live Lamb, one or the other. Not only that, the dead/live Lamb is also a LION, and a King.

Nevertheless, the artists, from Medieval Times to the Computer Age, have tried to illustrate this scene in Heaven at the End of Time.

I will be sharing some of those pictures, as inadequate as they might be, just to illustrate my point. But don't ask for the one I did 40 years ago. It's long gone! (and I'm glad!)

Speaking as one who has plenty to be humble about and has been properly chastised, I add my Amen!

Indeed.

Bass-Players can easily stumble into pride, because we are LOUD and AUTHORITATIVE, and keep the Rhythm Section in Sync with the rest of the band. As Belushi said in The Blues Brothers, they are the “Heartbeat, and the backbone” of the band.

Lest I get too proud playing bass in church, little things happen to make me humble. Like having to fish my cell phone out of the toilet.

And then waiting for hours in the cell phone store, unable to breathe due to a mask, and then being told that the phone was obsolete and had to be ordered.

So now I have no phone, and a HUGE storm is on the way, so I am afraid to get on the road phone-less for my lesson near Cape Cod today.

And, of course, I asked God to teach me PATIENCE.

He is doing that.

That was my day yesterday.

I won’t be getting a phone for a few days, as it has to be delivered to the store, and I have to go pick it up.

It has started to snow already, but it’s not sticking yet. I have to leave at 2:00PM to get to my student on time. If it looks bad by 2:00, I’ll call(landline) and cancel both of today’s lessons. If I can’t reschedule, I lose the money, but it’s not worth it to be stranded in the snow far from home without a phone.

I miss Florida.
