Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

1 Chronicles 17:1-7

God’s Promise to David

17 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.”

2 Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.”

3 But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

4 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. 5 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. 6 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders[a] whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’

7 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Painter and the Pianist were dear friends since childhood. Both were very good at what they did.

The Painter also loved to play the piano, but she was all thumbs. No matter how much she tried, she could not do anything better than a perfunctory version of "Fur Elise", while her friend could play Chopin with all the passion and accuracy of a concert pianist. The Painter struggled with jealousy, because she did not want this to ruin their friendship. But it ate away at her.

One day, the Painter gave the Pianist a little piece of artwork as a gift. It was a dreamy abstract that wove the keys of the piano through misty rainbows and clouds, and captured the essence of the Pianist's gift.

But the Pianist's reaction was not what the painter expected. The Pianist burst into tears and said,

"I'm so SORRY! I've been SO Jealous of you because you are such a gifted artist! I can't even draw a straight line!"

King David was a very gifted man, but God did not call him to be an "Architect". God called David to be a Shepherd, bot of real sheep, and later, of God's People. But David, being human, longed to create something that wasn't his calling. That would be for his son Solomon.

How many times are we discontented with our gifts and long to do something ELSE? This can cause lives to be disrupted, friendships to be broken, and jealousies to lurk beneath the surface, blighting relationships. May we all learn to be grateful and rejoice in what God has given us, rather than long for what He has given someone else!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 33

1 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
Praise befits the upright.
2 Praise the Lord with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skilfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle;
he put the deeps in storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands for ever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.

13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all humankind.
14 From where he sits enthroned he watches
all the inhabitants of the earth—
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all,
and observes all their deeds.
16 A king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory,
and by its great might it cannot save.

18 Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
21 Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

Pitchers want to play shortstop and shortstops want to pitch, guards want to play center and centers want to be point-guards. How wonderful it is when God designs you for your role, and your role for you, and then calls you to it!

Once again, Mary-Lou, your scriptural insights bless us. Thank you for obeying fully the Lord's call.

You challenge us to pray and then you make it rewarding and fun to do so. What a deal! And so I respond, Amen.
