CHILLIWACK, British Columbia, December 23, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Three Canadian churches in the province of British Columbia were recently handed fines totaling $18,400 for holding in-person services, which are currently banned under the provinces COVID-19 rules.
Police handed out eight separate $2,300 fines on December 17 to the Chilliwack, British Columbia churches Free Grace Baptist Church and Chilliwack Free Reformed Church, along with an unnamed third church. The fines were given for in-person services held a few days earlier, which police said violated COVID-19 rules.
In a press release explaining the charges, RCMP from the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment said they had engaged with the churches to “educate” them about the fact they were breaking local health regulations before handing them the fines.
“On the mornings of December 6 and 13, 2020, Chilliwack RCMP responded to reports of groups of people gathering at three separate churches contrary to the existing PHO (Public Heath Orders),” said police.
On the same day the tickets were handed out, the B.C. I>Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) sent an open letter to British Columbia’s top doctor, Dr. Bonnie Henry, and the province’s health minister, Adrian Dix, to implore them to reverse the ban on religious services.
