Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

Jeremiah 23

The Righteous Branch

23 “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. 2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.

5 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
    and do what is just and right in the land.
6 In his days Judah will be saved
    and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.

7 “So then, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’ 8 but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It seems that not a day goes by without some scandal about religious leaders. These cross all denominational lines and involve sex, money, drugs, and just about every other sin you can think up (and probably some you wouldn't even...ever!). This causes great sorrow to the Body of Believers, especially if one has invested time, money, and, most of all, LOVE into these ministries.

Sometimes it is merely a leader who has been corrupted, leaving the foundation intact. Other times the corruption sinks through all the layers of authority, and the entire organization is destroyed.

Whatever the case, the people who suffer the most are the "sheep". The shepherd may go to jail, or be ousted to set up his scam somewhere else, leaving the flock devastated, and maybe even losing their faith.

We may think this is a new phenomenon, combined with advances in technology, "updated" liturgies, and even the introduction of new music. We long for the old Liturgies, the traditional hymns, The older translations of the Bible, and even a return to 19th-Century Church Architecture. People opine that "this wouldn't have happened" back in the Good-Old-Days.

Jeremiah, however, belies that assumption in this amazing Prophecy that is a Double-Edged Sword.

First, God speaks through Jeremiah against bad religious leaders:

"Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. 2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord."

And so, in the dark days before there were Televangelists, Brutalist Modern Church Architecture, Rock Music, or "Inclusive Language Translations of the Bible", there were already "Bad Shepherds". Architecture, Music, and TV had nothing to do with it. These shepherds were CORRUPT, and were fleecing the flock in their own 8th Century BC kind of way. The thing that ties these bad shepherds together with the modern-day ones is they somehow think that God won't notice! God DOES notice though, and He is very angry with these bad shepherds. The reason we see so many reports about them is that they ALWAYS, eventually, get caught. Sometimes it takes years, but it will happen.

God doesn't just rebuke, however. Right after the scathing indictment of the bad shepherds, we see this:

"5 “The days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.
6 In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
The Lord Our Righteous Savior."

This is a "double-edged" Prophecy. The nearest fulfillment will be the Return from Exile in Babylon. This is confirmed by both Biblical and Historical Records. It HAPPENED.

But Christians reading this see a Messianic Fulfillment that is yet to come. When we studied the names and Titles of God on this Thread, we learned a few that are right here in this Passage:

1. The Son of David
2. The Righteous Branch
3. The King
4. The Lord Our Righteousness
5. Our Savior.

Finally, we have this Prophecy that has been fulfilled numerous times in History, and will again be fulfilled in the Last Days:

7 “So then, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’ 8 but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”
