What’s next? Vending Machine Indulgences?

Perhaps an Indulgences App - one that takes Apple Pay.

Yes, simply stated, he is only promised divine protection from error when he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church.

The Pope has even called Jesus is a liar on multiple occasions. Ignorant Catholics who don’t read their Bibles fall hook, line, and sinker.

Man this guy is speaking like a dragon.

I can’t picture anybody holding a candle to him for the candidacy of the False Prophet of Revelation..

Does that app come with a death stick that kills you if you refuse to worship his beast?

Maybe you need a covid-19 passport mark/tattoo for that to happen?

The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary has issued a decree granting special plenary indulgences, that is, full elimination of temporal punishment in Purgatory for a forgiven sin, during the “Year of St. Joseph.”

If it’s forgiven, then why is there punishment?

Punishing someone for something they have been forgiven of is unjust. It means they were really not forgiven.

Clearly some folks are very confused about what forgiveness is and means.

If one is going to disparage the religious practice of another, true Christian charity and good will demands that at least one be clear on the facts. Otherwise, one is tilting at a straw man:

https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/indulgences
An indulgence is the extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due, in God‘s justice, to sin that has been forgiven, which remission is granted by the Church in the exercise of the power of the keys, through the application of the superabundant merits of Christ and of the saints, and for some just and reasonable motive.

The only error I see in the original post is the idea that Tetzel is back after 500 years, when the truth is he never left. Sure, Rome cleaned up some of the more blatant abuses, but the point of the reformation was always the corrupt doctrine of Rome, not just the abuses. Plenty of the false teachings are highlighted here - purgatory, the power of the church to grant forgiveness, the concept of the keys to the kingdom, the "superabundant merits … of the saints" (there are none).

To answer the original question, there are no Martin Luthers in the Roman Church - the original was purged and any that follow will be purged. The differences are not style and side issues; Rome teaches a different gospel, which is not another (Galatians 1:6-7).

This is the kind of crap that gave us Martin Luther.

God gave us Martin Luther.

Or Mary’s perpetual virginity.
Matthew 1:24-25 disputes that, among other scripture.

Do I understand this right? the pope pronounces a decree, and God obeys the pope. Do I have it right? Seems backwards to me!

Oh it doesn’t stop with the pope, every priest at the altar has the power to ‘bring Christ down from the Throne Room’ to have His flesh and blood transmogrified by the hocus pocus of the priest into the wheat wafer for adherents consumption, thus getting God, body soul and spirit into their selves via their gut. A greater blasphemy only a fallen angel could conger up.

Right you are, of course, Metmom. If I pay for my sin by punishment for the sin then it’s me paying for it. I don’t know where the supposed forgiveness is in this.

It is like being a little bit pregnant. Either yous is or yous isn’t.

Forgiveness is NEVER earned, worked for, or paid for in any manner by the guilty party.

It’s freely given by the person offended with no strings attached.
