The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year's viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.
Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: "Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast." Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I've ever spent (I don't recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).
Let us not forget that Uriah the Hittite was also one of David’s ‘Mighty Men’......................
Indeed he was, emphasis on the past—and passed—tense.
AND he had a house close to David’s palace...................
TOO close. I wonder if he suspected that his king and his wife were capable of it all. Indeed, I wonder if THEY suspected.
Uriah was a loyal soldier and trusted David through all his campaigns and persecutions by Saul.
He had no idea he was going to be betrayed by those he loved.
Joab made sure of that...............
Thank you, Hebrews 11:6
Thriller post this morning. David’s mighty men of valor meant business.
Dan
So we bring it to him, and what does he do? He pours it out on the ground!
Anyway, Uriah the Hittite's family is a good study. Do you know who Bath-Sheba's grandfather was? Her father was a man named Eliam...
And Eliam was the son of Ahithophel.
GOD no doubt put a spirit of battle in them just as He did Samson.
I think the only way Joab stayed on as general was because he had the loyalty of the common soldiers. Joab and David despised each other, even more so after the debacle with Absolom. Joab had all the information to blackmail David as well, which is why David never sacked him after the murders of Abner and Amasa.
I will never forget my first visit to the City of David.
I was permitted access to a tunnel, an ancient tunnel, that was being excavated. I saw there was a brownish tinge on the walls of the tunnel.
All around me Israeli archaeologists were using paintbrushes. I asked about the walls - I was informed that these were bronze age tools.
LaterI saw a well, a well at the botton of the tunnel. There was still water flowing through the small creek. It had been hidden for centuries, or more.
It was not in the records of the most “recorded” city in the world. Just a hole, two feet or so by three feet.
David’s secret source of water.
Ignored by the media.
I saw it with my own eyes.
I think David feared Joab, because of his ruthlessness.
That is why be basically told young Solomon to get rid of Joab ASAP...............
I’ve always inferred that, aside from the threat of being blackmailed by Joab, David feared him, physically. He didn’t fear Goliath, but he feared Joab’s murderousness, Saul’s insanity, and Nathan’s disapproval.
What a treasured memory! Perhaps Mary-Lou saw it, too—she’s always going on and on and on about her three weeks underground in Jerusalem in 1984.
Seems to me their fervor for David, treasonously against the reigning king, must have been predicated on knowing that he was God’s anointed future king.
True. Patriots all.
