He had appeared earlier in the police force and was treated in a specialist clinic after each of these missions, it said.
The suspect is said to have thrown a stone slab in a window of the synagogue on Friday, November 20. Investigations by state security revealed that he had also allegedly damaged a window in the church in a similar act about a week earlier, on November 14.
Nationwide outrage over the attack
The man was filmed unmasked by a video camera as he rattled the windows and doors of the synagogue. This enabled the alleged perpetrator to be identified.

According to the police, it is now being checked whether the arrested person can be brought before a judge on Tuesday. The attack sparked outrage and a discussion about anti-Semitism nationwide.
Recordings of the attack then circulated on social media. The Central Council of Jews in Germany called for the incident to be clarified and for more security measures at synagogues.

Polizeilich sei er bereits früher in Erscheinung getreten und nach diesen Einsätzen jeweils in einer Fachklinik behandelt worden, hieß es weiter.
Der Verdächtige soll am Freitag, dem 20. November, eine Steinplatte in ein Fenster der Synagoge geworfen haben. Ermittlungen des Staatsschutzes ergaben, dass er zudem mutmaßlich bereits rund eine Woche zuvor, am 14. November, bei einer ähnlichen Tat ein Fenster des Gotteshauses beschädigt hatte.
Bundesweite Empörung über die Attacke
Dabei war der Mann unmaskiert von einer Videokamera gefilmt worden, wie er an Fenstern und Türen der Synagoge rüttelte. Dadurch konnte der mutmaßliche Täter identifiziert werden.
Nach Angaben der Polizei wird nun geprüft, ob der Festgenommene am Dienstag einem Haftrichter vorgeführt werden kann. Die Attacke hatte bundesweit Empörung und eine Diskussion über Antisemitismus ausgelöst.
Aufnahmen von dem Angriff kursierten anschließend auch in den sozialen Medien. Der Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland forderte die Aufklärung des Vorfalls und mehr Sicherheitsmaßnahmen an Synagogen.
