Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

.
1 Samuel 16
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil[a] spirit from the Lord tormented him.
15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.”
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

Psalm 135
1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord;
give praise, O servants of the Lord,
2 you that stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.
3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
sing to his name, for he is gracious.
4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,
Israel as his own possession.
5 For I know that the Lord is great;
our Lord is above all gods.
6 Whatever the Lord pleases he does,
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all deeps.
7 He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth;
he makes lightnings for the rain
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
8 He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
both human beings and animals;
9 he sent signs and wonders
into your midst, O Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 He struck down many nations
and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
and Og, king of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 and gave their land as a heritage,
a heritage to his people Israel.
13 Your name, O Lord, endures for ever,
your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people,
and have compassion on his servants.
15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
they have eyes, but they do not see;
17 they have ears, but they do not hear,
and there is no breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them
and all who trust them
shall become like them.
19 O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
You that fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
he who resides in Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the basement of a nearby Congregational Church is a little Thrift Store. It is only open about eight hours a week (4 on Wednesday and 4 on Saturday) and is mostly chinaware and decorative things, as it is located in a very old New England town. The lovely older "Church Ladies" who run the Thrift Store are very sweet and fun to talk to. I hadn't been there for months because of the quarantine. Finally, last Wednesday, I noticed it was open. I didn't know if I would find anything, but I just wanted to check in and say hello. It was mostly Christmas Decor, but I noticed a very nice instrument case that had a $5.00 tag on it. I opened up the case and there was a full-sized silvery flute inside.
Now, I don't play the flute, but my sister does. I have, however, a wall full of antique and ethnic musical instruments, mostly from India and Africa, that adorns my "eclectic" Living Room. Since Western Instruments are prohibitively expensive, my wall contained a lot of souvenir-type percussion instruments one might pick up on vacation. A flute, even if rusty and unplayable, would be a nice addition. I confirmed that the purchase was only $5.00 and not a misprint, and bought it, attached a piece of string to it, and hung it on the wall.
My neighbor Marie plays in two Symphony Orchestras, and when I told her I got a flute for $5.00 she laughed.
"Ha Ha Ha! What is it, a piece of plumber's pipe?"
We had a good laugh over that.
Last night, my sister came over and looked at the flute.
"It's probably an old student flute," she said."Do you have any alcohol wipes? I'll clean it up for you."
And so that's what she did. I sat down at the piano and began to play "A Whiter Shade of Pale", an old Classic Rock song that echoes J.S. Bach, and my sister played the flute. It was perfect. The flute had a sweet, warm tone without a single squeak or hiss of escaped air. It was beautiful.
"Are you sure you want to just hang it on the wall? It's too GOOD for that!" said my sister.
David the Shepherd was a person with many talents. He wrote some of the most beautiful poetry in all of Literature, which is still sung today. His music was therapeutic and his aim was lethal. He was to eventually become the king of Israel. But even his own family didn't think much of him. Sometimes the greatest treasures are the ones that are not appreciated.

My sister has a better flute already, but there is a painting I did of a cottage in Scituate that she was admiring.
My family rented the cottage in 1960 and took a snapshot. Later, every house on that spit of land was washed away in the Blizzard of ‘78.
So the snapshot and the painting are all that are left.
I think she would like the painting better, but the flute is a good idea as well. Maybe I should teach myself to play it! :-)

Those are both wonderful ideas! And you have the perfect teacher, your sister. What sweet memories that will bring.
Just being able to play one song on an instrument can bring so much joy.

That is so true. That is why I get right into actual songs when I teach piano. "Ode To Joy" is so much more satisfying than "March of the Fingers".LOL.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

" David Playing The Harp Before Saul" Rembrandt van Rijn |
|
| _ | UT the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an | harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
