14 “Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.

15 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt.

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

16 “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Ruthie, my mother-in-law, had at least FOUR sets of dishes. There were two sets for every day use, and two sets for Passover. There were probably two more sets that were for nicer dinners, but not Passover, so that would make six sets. There were also two different cakes of dish soap, marked in red or blue ink, and two sets of dish towels and sponges for washing the dishes. The pots and pans and cooking utensils were also segregated in this manner. It was puzzling to me, as all I knew about "Keeping Kosher" was "NO Bacon!". What was it with the dishes? Ruthie patiently explained that meals that contained meat could NOT be served with anything that had milk in it. That meant NO Beef Stroganoff, NO Mac & Cheese as a side, NO sour cream on that Baked Potato if it is served with meat, and NO CHEESEBURGERS! I saw an even more draconian application of these rules when I worked in a Kosher Nursing Home. They had two entirely separate kitchens to ensure that meat never touched milk dishes and vice-versa. When I asked "Why?", I was told that that was how it had always been, and it came from the Bible...somewhere. (I was also handed the theory that it was a hygiene measure from 40 years of desert wandering with only unglazed pottery and wooden utensils)

Well, here in today's reading, we have the one little verse that instituted the entire system of "Dishes".

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk."

"Well, that's just NASTY!" you might say. "Who would even THINK about doing a thing like that!" The symbolic implications of such a practice outweigh any reason for doing such a thing.

And yet, the heart of man is depraved beyond measure. According to Bible Scholars this very practice was done by the Canaanites as a religious ceremony, along with human sacrifice and other abominations. It was part of their worship. It had everything to do with paganism and nothing to do with dishes. The subsequent rules about the dishes were codified so one wouldn't do this awful thing even by ACCIDENT. And it worked. I don't think a single Jewish Person who keeps Kosher would ever have boiled a baby goat in his own mother's milk, even by mistake, not in 3000 YEARS.

In our own "sophisticated" culture, we look back at the Ancients and smugly say that we live in more enlightened times. And yet, in every city, there are dozens of abortion clinics. People who are pro-abortion have almost a religious fervor about these horrible places, and the so-called "right" for them to continue their grisly deeds. People who insist upon "cruelty-free" mousetraps, oppose forest management, and will deny people the use of fossil fuels, have no compunction about a place where thousands of human babies are killed every year.

The worship of Moloch (the baby-killing god of the Canaanites) continues unabated. We haven't made much progress in 3000 years. We are not so "Enlightened" after all.
