51 When all the work King Solomon had done for the temple of the Lord was finished, he brought in the things his father David had dedicatedthe silver and gold and the furnishingsand he placed them in the treasuries of the Lords temple.
CHAPTER 8
Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lords covenant from Zion, the City of David.
3 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark, 4 and they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests and Levites carried them up, 5 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.
6 The priests then brought the ark of the Lords covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. 7 The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark.

10 When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. 11 And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.
12 Then Solomon said, The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; 13 I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.

62 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the Lord. 63 Solomon offered a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to the Lord: twenty-two thousand cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the Israelites dedicated the temple of the Lord.
66 On the following day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and then went home, joyful and glad in heart for all the good things the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.

The Ancient City of Jerusalem with Solomon's Temple
With his kind permission, I am taking the liberty of reproducing verbatim here Forgiven_Sinners excellent critique of the map above, from Sundays thread:Your last image, the zoomable one of Jerusalem, was confusing. North was to the left and east to the top. The topology doesnt really match Jerusalem very well. The temple doesnt look like the first or second temple. Jesus came to the second temple, but His events are overlaid with Solomons temple.
That said, I appreciate the gate markings and the indications of where Jesus had significant activity.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not Great Paintings nor even Good Paintings. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion herethey dont need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sothebys. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem appallingly snail-like
to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic; but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willingthis is His project, after all. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!
S e q u e n c i n g The Protestant Canon does not (indeed, it cannot)
follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I treat synoptically. Now, onward!Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so Im just having fun hereI hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.. .

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire years viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.
Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast. Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet accessbest 35 bucks Ive ever spent (I dont recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

The temple was actually very small, even by the standards of the time. Beautifully appointed, and ironically built with the help of ‘sub contractors’ and materials from King Hiram of Tyre, a Phoenician pagan!...........
Seems to me yours is a good summation: small, exquisite, subbed-out substantially to foreigners—although in 7:13 the text takes pains to point out that interior designer Huram is HALF Jewish anyway.
#68 and 69 are part of a huge scale model of 1st Century Jerusalem, on the grounds of the Holy Land Hotel. It’s quite impressive in person.
You have exposed me! Here I had everyone thinking they were actual aerial photographs taken 2,000 years ago, but YOU had to come along and show off. I can’t get away with anything around here.
I’m watching the series “A.D.” currently, and I think they used that model for their overhead scene-setting shots. Quite impressive.
"Dia shábháil ar fad anseo!" |
"God save all here!" |
“a fitting home”—it would be hard to argue against that view. Anyway, the proof is that He did, indeed, come and reside there, thereby granting it His approval.
I truly appreciated this series on the building of the Temple. Is #73 by Tissot?
Its style is reminiscent of him in several respects: the beanies on everyone, the coloring, the meticulous attention to detail, all of which made me wonder the same thing. But having seen dozens of his biblical scenes now, the fine facial features—the Jewish “look” he regularly employed—are absent. So, I would say “No.”
Thanks, yes, the faces are not as Tissot would have painted.
I enjoyed the images of the cherubim in the Holy of Holies.
59 has 6 wings - that’s a seraphim, as described in Isaiah 6.
But it gives you a good perspective on the size of the Holy of Holies - at a minimum, it was a 30-foot cube (18” cubit, 20 cubits on a side). It may have been a 40-foot cube with the 25” cubit. The cherubim in this picture tower over the high priest.
60 has the cherubim with 4 wings, but lacking the 4 faces.
62 has them pretty much as I imagine them from Ezekiel 1.
The Temple is to picture back the Garden of Eden and God’s original plan to dwell with man.
Cherubim are described in Ezekiel 1. Quite formidable.
So glad I was finally able, in context, to present the Ezekiel critters you requested, Jeff. I KNEW you’s take notice! Of course, if I could have figured out a way of omitting them, just to annoy you....i still have a while before reaching Ezekiel, though, but that will take some doing. I probably just need your IP address, and then I can post a doctored thread just to you. Stocking up now on midnight oil.
I’m interested in cherubim and seraphim. Cherubim are all over the Bible, but they’re only described in Ezekiel 1. Seraphim are described in Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4.
Just think: we get to actually meet them!
Which brings up a curiosity: what language(s) is spoken in heaven? Or will we simply understand all languages?
