Exodus 9
The Plague on Livestock

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “Let my people go, so that they may worship me.” 2 If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, 3 the hand of the Lord will bring a terrible plague on your livestock in the field—on your horses, donkeys and camels and on your cattle, sheep and goats. 4 But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt, so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.’”

5 The Lord set a time and said, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this in the land.” 6 And the next day the Lord did it: All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died. 7 Pharaoh investigated and found that not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died. Yet his heart was unyielding and he would not let the people go.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

"Whatever you do, DON'T go to a bullfight!"

This sage advice came from a friend who had traveled widely as I was planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta. Evidently, back in 1992, Bullfights were part of the tourist attractions in some parts of Mexico. And, even though every hippie pad in the 60's came fully equipped with bullfighting posters, it was definitely NOT on my agenda. (I did, however, snorkel the reefs at Los Arcos, ride a horse up the Sierra Madre, and rent a vintage WW2 Jeep for some fun Pacific Dune-riding. I did not drink the tap water in Mexico City. I'm not a complete idiot!). Anyway, I drew the line at bullfights. And now, let's explore what this seeming non-sequitur has to do with the 5th Plague of Egypt.

I opened up my computer this morning to find out that Sean Connery, the Ultimate Favorite James Bond, passed away last night. Both The Actor and the character portrayed are like the Matador and the Bull: Powerful Symbols of Virility, Strength, and Power.

The Bull, and Cattle, as deified symbols, go all the way back to Ancient Egypt, and are echoed in other Mediterranean Cultures such as the Minoans on Crete, and, of course, Spain. On Crete, Archaeologists have uncovered striking wall murals showing youths leaping over the head of a very big and ferocious bull. The "Running of the Bulls" in Pamplona, Spain, is a continuation of this practice, and has become a tourist attraction. The bullfights trace their ancestry back to these ceremonies.

In Egypt, the worship of cattle went way overboard. Just as the Bull was the symbol of virility, the cow was a symbol of fertility and nurture. In Serappis, an entire mortuary complex was found, filled with mummies...of Bulls! The two most beloved goddesses, Isis and Hathor, were always pictured with cow's horns. Egyptians liked cattle so much that they hated sheep, due to the fact that the two species were in competition for the sparse grazing land. And, of course, as we learned early on, the Hebrews were SHEPHERDS! So, the peace of Joseph was not going to last long after the Patriarch's death.

Just as the first four plagues targeted the gods of the Nile, the 5th struck at the most powerful gods and goddesses that were embodied by cattle. Apis the Bull, and the goddesses Isis and Hathor, were suddenly defeated by a pestilence. But the livestock of the Hebrews remained healthy. It was God's way of saying, "It's not the animals that are being judged, it's your FAKE GODS!"
