Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

Exodus 8
The Plague of Flies

20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.

22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23 I will make a distinction[b] between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’”

24 And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.

25 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”

26 But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”

28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me.”

29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord, 31 and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32 But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Flies are just NASTY. They are a sure sign of death and corruption.

Psalm 67

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
Selah
2 that your way may be known upon earth,
your saving power among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
Selah
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

6 The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, has blessed us.
7 May God continue to bless us;
let all the ends of the earth revere him.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Because I live in a mobile home in a wooded area, I have a bit of a "mouse problem". With all the sticky-traps, "humane" traps, pheromone-based repellents, ultrasonic devices, Peppermint oil repellent, etc, the best solution seems to be the "Snap-Trap" made famous by cartoons. However, I love cheese too much to waste it on mice, so peanut butter is my bait of choice. (Don't suggest I get a cat, as Penny would be appalled!). Every Autumn, like clockwork, the mice show up in the lower kitchen cabinets, and I loathe them.

Now, when I first found out about the mice, I got sticky traps. However the mice dealt with these by dragging them away, chewing off the corner of the trap, or (HORRORS!) chewing off their own foot and leaving it behind. Ugh! Then I tried the repellents. The mice ATE them. I tried poison, but that was the worst thing because then the mice would die somewhere under the mobile home resulting in a plague of FLIES. Yeeaackk!

Finally, I got the old-fashioned snap-traps. Of course, this means I have to bait them, carefully put them in place, and dispose of the corpse the next morning. But that seems to work better than all the other methods...and...NO FLIES!

When a perfectly picnic is ruined by flies, we often wonder why God would allow such a creature to exist. They are particularly nasty, and buzz around garbage, dead things, and poop, so one can only imagine what diseases they carry. Flies are particularly useful to forensic pathologists, because the development of their larvae determines the time of death. (I know...eyew). Without flies CONSUMING the waste of death, we would have no room on the planet for the LIVING. And so, flies do have a purpose. They are Nature's Disposal Team. I get it. I understand.

BUT JUST STAY AWAY FROM ME!

God's judgement upon Pharaoh was also against the gods of Egypt. The Nile was a "god" and so it was turned into blood and produced frogs. The Egyptians even worshiped a beetle that rolled little balls of dung and laid eggs in it, and the resulting larvae fed upon the dung upon hatching. The Egyptians saw the beetle as the symbol of a god, rolling the sun across the sky every morning to divide the day from the night, and so they deified the creature. We still see the image of the "sacred" Scarab Beetle all through the centuries of Egyptian Art.

While beetles, gnats, flies, and even mosquitoes are essential to the environment, when they get "out of balance" they become a PLAGUE. God didn't have to create a new "Monster" to judge the gods of Egypt. All He had to do was throw the balance out of whack to WHACK the fake gods and those who worshiped them.

This is where the Nature-Worshipers make their big mistake. In trying to eliminate one problem completely, they create worse ones. The proliferation of wind-turbine blades, piling up in land fills, that won't decay, is a perfect example of this. I am sure you can think of other examples, especially with the current situation with the coronavirus. Sometimes, the "cure" is worse than the "disease." Well...gotta go now. I have some mouse-corpses to dispose of!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The Fourth Plague Of Egypt"
Illuminated Manuscript
William de Brailes – c. 1230

Pharaoh (at left) is attacked by a lion, a wolf, a bear, a wildcat—even an angry red squirrel—while Moses (right) looks on, in this illumination from the Golden Haggadah, created in Spain in the 14th century. The scene depicts the fourth of the ten plagues visited on Egypt in Exodus 8.

The plagues are an important part of the Haggadah, the midrashic retelling of the Exodus that is read aloud every year during the Passover Seder. And many illustrated Haggadot are enlivened by graphic depictions of the punishments God inflicted on Egypt. Most (but not all) depict the fourth plague as vicious beasts.

The Hebrew name for the fourth plague—‘arov—is not so precise, however; it simply means “mixture.” Rabbis as early as the second century C.E. debated what this meant.

_ ND the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.

And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

And the LORD did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.

And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?

We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he shall command us.

And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: intreat for me.

And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.

And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.

And the LORD did according to the word of Moses; and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.

And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

When we had a mouse problem, my husband baited the traps with a scrap from his old T-shirt smeared with bacon fat. Mice love bacon. And they tugged on cloth in the trap—snap!

Then a neighbor gave us a kitten, another story, and had her for 19 years. No mice.

Likewise, there was an interesting show on NOVA about ecology. The fearscape. How the lack of big predators really screwed up the environment by prey grazing in open areas with no fear and madly reproducing. And when predators were re-introduced the ecology of the region got more balanced.

Any way, joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

Do NOT try what one fool did: Fed up with mice entering his home, he resolved to attack the problem at its source, their nest. Finally, he found it, threw in gasoline and a match, and then watched helplessly as the frantic flaming mice escaped their blazing nest and ran for the only cover they knew: his house, which burned right down to the ground--to the firefighters' intense amusement, once they learned the cause.

Oh, Amen!

Oh yes I read that article! Ha Ha Ha. Too bad mice aren’t like ants, which take poison back to their Queen, and thus stop the pests at the very root.

I have fire insurance, which would provide me with a new “Dubbilwahd” if I burned my house down, but I think the INshawns Company don’t pay out for STUPIDITY! (switched from Boston dialect to Trailer Park Speak!)
