Exodus 8
The Plague of Gnats

16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17 They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18 But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not.

Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19 the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the Lord had said.

The best screens in the world don't seem to be effective against Gnats. We used to call them "Noseeums", but I suppose that is now "Politically Incorrect".

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
You Are The Almighty,
The Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days,
The Great I AM,
The King of the Universe,
The Creator, Sustainer, and Destroyer of Worlds!
The Alpha and Omega,
The Beginning and the End
Our Provider,
Our Banner,

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Back in the 1960's, most of the movies of the 30's, 40's and 50's were consigned to TV on a Saturday night. They were reduced to a small screen, devoid of color, greatly redacted, and interrupted by incessant commercials. However, in Harvard Square in Cambridge, The Brattle Street Theater was showing the Classics on a wide screen, with popcorn and snacks, and old-time movie theater ambiance. It was a great cheap date, even if getting there involved a bus to Jamaica Plain, the Elevated Train into Boston, and a change to yet another train that went all the way to the end of the line to Harvard Square.There were also Coffee Houses in Harvard Square, which didn't serve liquor, so we were able to pop in and hear such unknowns as Tom Waits, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan.

The Brattle Street theater played Humphrey Bogart movies almost exclusively. I loved them all, but my favorites were "Casablanca" and "The African Queen". Both movies featured some extremely wicked villains, but the scariest scene was in "The African Queen". The heroes had just battled the worst rapids on the river, which nearly crushed their little boat. But that wasn't the scary part. After barely surviving the rapids, the boat floats gently to a shady bit of shoreline. Breathing a sigh of relief, the two people in the boat welcome the respite.

Suddenly, the air around them is filled with gnats! Horrified they slap at themselves and try to shoo the gnats away but it is impossible. They have to get out of that calm space immediately, and are back on the river again.

The whole movies has a string of perils: Rapids, Angry Natives, Crocodiles, Leeches, Labyrinths of Reeds, Mud, and Imperial German Gunboats, but, in my humble opinion, there was no scene quite as horrifying as the one with the gnats.

Evidently, Pharaoh was faced with the same horror. His magicians could not duplicate this miracle, and declared it "The Finger of God".

It seems that the worst enemies we face are often those we can't see.
