Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus7 and 8
The Plague of Frogs

25 Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.

8. 1.Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. 3 The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. 4 The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”

5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’”

6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

8 Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”

10 “Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.

Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”

12 After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. 14 They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

During my first few years in Florida, we had a plague of Cane Toads every Spring. These were large, ugly toads, whose skin excreted a venomous substance that could cause euphoria and hallucinations if ingested. It could also kill a person. So, in their great "wisdom" the Department of Agriculture had a massive campaign against licking Cane Toads. As if anyone would even try such a thing, unless the Department of Agriculture had suggested it in the first place. And who, pray tell, was the first one to posit, "Hey...I wonder if I can get high by licking that big, warty, ugly, disgusting, TOAD?"

Anyway, I had an amazingly smart Border Collie named Torey. Torey was so smart that she could howl on pitch when Classical Music was being played. She watched TV with me, and actually cried during an animal show when a wolf was ejected from the pack and made to wander alone. Not to anthropomorphize Torey, she was still a dog, but man, was she SMART!

After watching a TV program with me (complete with PSA's about Cane-Toad-Licking), Torey scratched at the door to be let out. She bounded across the yard, found a cane toad, held it down with her paw and began to LICK the horrid thing! I rushed out and grabbed her before she got too far. Perhaps I saved her life. I have no idea if she had a "trip", because she kept her experience to herself. She didn't show any signs of disorientation or distress, so she might have been immune.

The Cane Toads were particularly abundant one year, and filled the driveways and sidewalks. They squished under the wheels of the cars and made a nasty stench. They never, however, got as far as my bed. That would have been the Last Straw! Antarctica, HERE I COME!

And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.

And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses cried unto the Lord because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.

And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

And they gathered them together upon heaps: and the land stank.
