I'm guessing that method of signing a work enjoyed a brief vogue back then. I like it, but I also understand why it probably died out: too distracting. I especially like it when an artist's works are instantly identifiable just by their style; probably the most iconic we see frequently here are Chagall, Doré, Rembrandt and Tissot, although there are others we see less often: Collet, Lavee, McBee, Raanan....
