2 David went with his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail. 3 David also took the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns. 4 Then the men of Judah anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.

8 Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-Bosheth son of Saul and 9 made him king over all Israel.

10 The tribe of Judah, however, remained loyal to David.

12 Abner, with the men of Ish-Bosheth, went to Gibeon. 13 Joab and David’s men went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon.

14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.”

“All right, let them do it,” Joab said.

15 So they stood up and were counted off—twelve men for Benjamin and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David. 16 Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger into his opponent’s side, and they fell down together.

17 The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated by David’s men.

CHAPTER 3

1 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.”

13 “Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”

15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband.

21 Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

27 Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.

CHAPTER 4

1 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

6 The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.

8 On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft to reach those ‘lame and blind’ who are David’s enemies.” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

9 David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him.

11 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

13 After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

P a c i n g
The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I’m just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.

At the Holy Spirit's prompting, I am surveying "Bible art" to give God glory, as many of these artists have done, and for my own amusement and learning; and I thought others might enjoy it and be blessed by it, too. My plan is to proceed methodically from left-to-right, Genesis to Revelation, as the Lord wills. Back soon with another.

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!

But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.

Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

#5, David’s highly expressive face in the portrait by Pedro Berruguete, a remarkable Renaissance painter from Spain. I admire this painter a lot.

Obviously, you know your stuff! I couldn't find his name, and I bring zero prior knowledge to the game.

Ordinarily, I eschew portraits as being generally unhelpful in illustrating the text, which is my overarching goal, and I've had many passed opportunities. But, like you, I found this one to be special.

I had the joy of touring the ancient city of Jebus/Jerusalem/City of David/Zion last November. There’s about a 30-foot rock cliff at the bottom of the Kidron valley, which was surmounted by a wall. Within the wall was a well.

The theory is that David’s men followed an irrigation pipe to the well, and then climbed it into the city. I climbed the well via a staircase and it was 6-8 stories.

Sounds quite plausible. One can only imagine the difficulty of them ascending stealthily.

You remind me of 52 years ago when, while on a summer job as a draftsman for the Army Corps of Engineers, a structural engineer and I climbed a 110' vertical ladder (in 110° heat) up the outside of a hangar at Edwards AFB. Still appreciate my boss letting me tag along. Absolutely unforgettable.

Great timing.

I really like #3. Both David and the man who is anointing him are wearing socks with their sandals.

Perhaps that’s how the men of Judah knew that David was just the right king for them.

I mean here’s a guy who goes about in public, wearing socks with his sandals. A sure tell that David was a humble man of the people! ;)

Like father like son..

Keen eye for detail.

I see what you did there. :)

I was going to suggest that very brand, but then I realized that the ones in the painting don't have the toe shield.

Well that was then, and this is now.

Keen indeed! Keep on the lookout.

I especially like the last one, showing King David finally entering Jerusalem after all those years of promise and preparation. Seven years ruling in Hebron! I haven’t considered closely whether this entry is meant to be symbolic of Jesus’ coming Glory, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
