Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Genesis 47

Joseph and the Famine

13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine. 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace. 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.”

16 “Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[c] from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”

25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”

26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.

27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.

28 Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven. 29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,” he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[d]

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

While many Conservatives might raise an eyebrow at Joseph's handling of the Famine, remember, the most he ever taxed was one 5th (20%). That is better than most people's tax rate.

Psalm 16

A Miktam of David.

1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.’*

3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.

4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;*
their drink-offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.

11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This is a story that I remember from The Boston Symphony Orchestra's Children's Concerts. I do not remember if it was Leonard Bernstein who told the story, or another guest conductor, so I just have to rely on my memory of the story itself:

The King of Siam was invited to attend a Symphony Concert in a Great Western Capital City. With great pomp he was escorted to a seat of honor close to the stage. The musicians in the orchestra, in perfect evening wear, were already seated on stage and were busily tuning up their instruments. The cacophony of tuning reached a crescendo, and then abruptly stopped as the Conductor walked to the podium. The conductor tapped his baton, and then launched into a program of the best of the Classics, From Mozart to Beethoven, Bach to Wagner. As the last note faded away, the audience erupted into thunderous applause. It was one of the best performances in the orchestra's history!

After the Concert, the King of Siam was interviewed.

"What did you think of the Concert?" The reporter asked. "What was your favorite part?"

"Oh it was marvelous," replied the King. "But I liked the very first song the best. It was just before the Conductor came out. Why didn't they even put that piece onto the printed program? I would love to know its name."

This puzzled the reporter greatly. There wasn't any Musical Number played before the Conductor came out. What was the King talking about?

The King was talking about the thing concert goers all take for granted, the tuning of the orchestra. Each musician is doing his own thing, making sure his own instrument is in tune with itself. Then, all the instruments are synchronized so that they are all in tune with each other. To the King of Siam, this was the closest thing to the sound of his own native music, which is totally different than Western Music.

You may wonder why I am talking about Music, when we are now in a study about Shepherds. But hang in there...you will see the relevance.

A few years ago, a sermon on this very chapter circulated on the Internet. It compared Joseph's management of the famine to creeping socialism. It was actually a good sermon, and I wish I could find it now. Maybe you will have better luck finding it. It illustrated the danger of giving up one's freedom and sovereignty for the sake of a government handout. It was a good illustration, but didn't take into account the culture or the severity of the times. Like the King of Siam, the author of the sermon was applying his own cultural norms to a very small part of the program, to the detriment of the rest of the story. Emergency measures should never be permanent. Although the People of Egypt had been reduced to the status of Tenant Farmers, they still kept 4/5's of their production. One may argue that it is a better deal than many of us have now. One can also argue that emergency measure imposed during times of great stress (such as WW2, The Depression, or even COVID) should have an expiration date. Once the emergency has been aleviated, it's time to start living again!

Did the story about the King of Siam ring a bell?

If so, then we have two witnesses that it was Leonard who told the story!

I can’t remember the details. But I know my music teacher urged us kiddies to watch.

She gave me free piano lessons in fourth grade. But in fifth grade I took to the flute.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

__
there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the
money into Pharaoh's house.
And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.

And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.

When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.

And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands.

Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:

But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said. And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.
