Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Bedtime on a "School-Night" was 8:00PM, no exceptions! Well, there was one exception and that was me. My favorite TV show STARTED at 8:00PM on a School-Night, and I had a special dispensation from DADDY to stay up late that one night a week.

I had the biggest CRUSH on Guy Williams, the actor who played Zorro. Perhaps I was more in love with Zorro, the character. Here he was, the Romantic Latin Superhero, whose secret identity was that of an effete aristocratic playboy, but who donned a mask, hat, and cape and slipped out at night to fight for Justice and Truth. MY HERO! I had the mask, the hat, and the cape, and a plastic sword with a piece of chalk on the end, to leave my "Z" wherever I went. Since I had all the accoutrements, I always got to play Zorro, while my unfortunate overweight pal had to play Sargent Garcia. (Forgive me, Teresa, I repent of that cruelty.)

A very prominent character in the series was Zorro's manservant and accomplice Bernardo. Bernardo was supposed to be deaf and mute, and always communicated in sign language. However, this too was a ruse. Bernardo was mute, but he wasn't deaf. Only Zorro knew this secret. Because everybody thought Bernardo was deaf, they said anything they wanted in front of him. Not only did they think Bernardo was deaf, they also thought nothing of him because he was merely a servant, and therefore of no consequence. They also assumed that,as a deaf-mute, he was also simpleminded. Bernardo was another hero of mine: smart, cool, and able to take all kinds of abuse with equanimity.

Joseph had been abused horribly by "The System" and also by his own Brothers, but now he was in a position of authority. He had grown up during his time in Egypt, and now was about 30 years old. He was clothed in fine linen, a wig, jewels, and had his eyes outlined in kohl to keep out the sun. He instantly recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.

With his interpreter by his side, Joseph did not let on that he understood everything his brothers were saying. And so, like the bad guys in Zorro, they spoke freely among themselves. And, like Bernardo, Joseph heard every word. Hearing them talk about what they did to him affected him so deeply that he had to turn away and weep.

In 1965 my hero Guy Williams was going to be in a new series. I was SO excited! Once again, I sat in front of the TV to see my hero on the screen. Ugh! There he was, older,grayer, and stuffed into a spacesuit like a giant sausage as the father in "LOST IN SPACE". He was unrecognizable as Zorro! He didn't seem to be the same person. I couldn't watch it. Thank goodness, "STAR TREK" was just around the corner for me to meet my new flame, Leonard Nimoy.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

I always felt badly for Guy Williams where “Lost in Space” was concerned. He was under the impression he’d be the star of the show, boldly leading his family and fighting the villain of the week. From episode #1, he was upstaged by flamboyant villain Jonathan Harris as Dr. Smith (and although Williams had the “star” billing, Harris’ perpetual “guest star” billing meant he was really the star). No doubt Williams was happy when the show ended, and he later left the U.S. to move to Argentina, where he was absolutely revered for “Zorro”, and lived out his last years as if he were the retired character (and even grew out the moustache to make the transformation complete).

I never knew there was a sword with chalk to write a Z...that is far better cool that the dumb video games kids play haha!! Oh, I LOVE LOST IN SPACE....I never missed one episode. Thak you for memory lane and sharing your stories. Thank you for your prayer and devotion to us and the Peace of Jerusalem. God Bless. Joining in all of these.
