Genesis 40

The Cupbearer and the Baker

40 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

After they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.

6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”

8 “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”

12 “This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.[a] 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

18 “This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”

20 Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand— 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I have suffered the loss of five good friends since the COVID Lockdown, and NONE of them have been from COVID. Just yesterday, I heard a rumor that my Contractor and Riding Buddy, Jim, had died. Jim was struggling with domestic difficulties, overweight, and associated health issues, yet he was the only person who understood the vision I had for adding a peaked roof and a mud room to my mobile home. Like me, his greatest joy was riding his BIG Indian Motorcycle, and I counseled and prayed with him on occasion.

Well, of course, there was no answer on his cell phone, so I gathered up my courage and went to his house, not knowing what to expect when I got there, and praying out loud in the car all the way over. I knocked, but there was nobody home. I was about to leave when his wife pulled up. I went right over to her and hugged her, and just let her talk. It seems that she found Jim on his knees beside the bed, his face on the bed, and not moving. She called 911, but he was already gone. She is so distraught as she needs to fight for custody of Jim's 13-year-old son from a previous marriage, dispose of three mobile homes (two of which are uninhabitable), three trucks, a snow plow, and the Indian Motorcycle. Not only that, but his nasty relatives who have never given him the time of day are descending upon her like vultures. I offered my condolences and help with selling the motorcycle since I went through the same thing in 2011. I also recommended she get a lawyer, but mostly I just let her talk.

Joseph was in no shape to be advising his fellow prisoners. And yet, even in that dark dungeon, falsely imprisoned, falsely accused, betrayed by his own brothers, Joseph shone with an integrity that impressed not only his jailers, but his fellow prisoners. He admitted that his wisdom was not his own, but came from God. He did not sugar-coat the message, but only told the truth as God gave him the interpretation.

As we look ahead to the Confirmation of Judge Amy, we must be prepared for any and all false accusations, crazy scandals, and phony charges that the Left will manufacture. They hate her because she is unabashedly Pro-Life, and is a Person of Faith. Please pray that no matter what "they" throw at her, she will rise above them all in her integrity, and be a "Joseph" for our time.

ND it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.

And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.

And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.

And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?

And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:

And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:

For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:

And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:

But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

Your message brought back the memory of my grandfather who too was found on kneeling at his bedside in prayer when he passed away. May this bring encouragement and joy to you even as you mourn your loss. To know one that passed away during prayer is great comfort. I pray that for his wife too.
