Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Genesis 13

Abram and Lot Separate

13 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.

3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.

5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.

8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”

18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.

Footnotes

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"This town ain't big enough for the both of us!"

This Classic Western Movie Line was often spoken by the Sheriff when facing down the Bad Guy. (We knew who the "Bad Guy" was because he wore a black hat.) However, it wasn't always a "Law and order" issue. Sometimes, it had to do with livestock.

Cattle eat the tops of the grass, and move on. Sheep nibble it down to the ground and move on. Goats eat right down to the roots and then, the grass doesn't grow back. In America's Wild West, this got to be a problem. Hollywood has quite a few movies about the conflicts between Ranchers, Cowboys, Farmers, and Sheep-Herders. Even the Musical "Oklahoma" has a song addressing this issue. I suppose the "Bad Guy" would depend on what YOU do for a living. If you are a Shepherd, the "Bad Guy" just might be the Cowboy in the white hat.

Some things never change, and this is proven by today's Scripture Passage. Abraham took good care of his Nephew Lot. There were even times when Abraham had to muster up a posse to rescue him when he was kidnapped. God was blessing Abraham mightily, and so Lot was being blessed just being around him. Their flocks and herds (which were their wealth) began to multiply, and with that came more hirelings and attendants to watch over them.

Well, sure enough, the hirelings had no family loyalty or regard for one another like Abraham and Lot had. The sheep and goats kept eating, and conflicts arose. The land wasn't big enough for all of them.

Abraham had to split up from his nephew to keep the peace. He did, however, graciously give Lot the first choice of where to take his flocks and herds and wealth. Naturally, Lot chose the fertile plain with the best grazing, and even some nice cities for some "recreation and culture".

Well, that area is one of the bleakest places on earth now, the lowest point on the planet, with a poison sea and pillars of salt. The ruins of the "nice cities" are still there, and are named Sodom and Gomorrah.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

My "Amen" to your important prayers.

Yes, Abraham was gracious, but nephew Lot's neglected obligation was to defer to his uncle. This failure is the first scriptural signal of his moral deficiencies that we see developed in the text. We're all members of that club.

Loved Richard Harris' portrayal of Abraham. Now you've made me want to watch it again.

Excellent Point! I suppose that such filial respect was more expected back in the Tribal Culture of the Ancient Middle East, which made Lot's decision even more disrespectful. And good ol' Abraham was able rescue Lot one more time.
