The pre-Vatican II Mass had as the Gospel reading Luke 6.12-19, where he is called Bartholomew (as he is in Matthew and Mark). John has "Nathanael." There is an early tradition that Bartholomew and Nathanael are the same--but is it correct?
I had an ancestor in the 18th century who was named for St. Bartholomew. I know the year but not the day of his birth. I wonder if his birthday was that of his patron saint--August 24.
