Cover-Up Culture Gave McCarrick License

New investigation sheds light on old crimes

NEWARK, N.J. (ChurchMilitant.com) - New details are emerging regarding the Church hierarchy's cover-up of notorious homosexual pederast Theodore McCarrick, freeing the former cardinal to continue with his crimes unabated.

Mark Crawford and Fr. Kenneth Martin

An investigative analysis published on Monday reveals that Vatican officials and other prelates ignored or overlooked reports on McCarrick's misdeeds and odd sleeping arrangements with seminarians at his infamous beach house in Sea Girt, New Jersey.

Now working for the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), Mark Crawford met with McCarrick in 1997 to inform the then-archbishop of Newark that Fr. Kenneth Martin had beaten and sexually abused him and his brother. McCarrick did not keep any of the promises he made during that meeting so Crawford wrote the U.S. cardinals in 1998 for help.

Of the few cardinals who responded, two are well-known for cover-up and shuffling around wayward clergy in their own dioceses — Cdl. Roger Mahony of Los Angeles and now-deceased Cdl. Bernard Law of Boston.

Mahony assured Crawford that McCarrick is "greatly concerned about all these problems and issues, and I know that you can rely upon him to be attentive to these pastoral needs." Law told Crawford that "Your pain and frustration is (sic) familiar to me because I have had to deal with the problem of sexual misconduct by clergy," and asked Crawford to "pray for the leaders of the Church, that we might do God's will whenever this awful problem occurs."

More Recent Cover-Up

While Cdl. Joseph Tobin of the Newark archdiocese (a well-documented supporter of homosexuality) admitted the archdiocese and the Metuchen diocese reached settlements in 2005 and 2007 with two seminarians over claims against McCarrick, he chose not to discuss new information with a clergy investigator and then later accused the investigator of concealing information.

Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo told NorthJersey.com that he met with Tobin in 2018 to present the prelate with letters pertinent to the McCarrick investigation. Figueiredo reports that Tobin said, "This was not the time to discuss that."

The archdiocese released a statement saying, "Cdl. Tobin has not seen the contents of the letters to which you refer, and it would be inappropriate to comment on them without seeing them. Information and correspondence publicly released or information still not made public by Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo properly belong to the Holy See to investigate."

When Figueiredo posted the letters, Tobin wrote to him, claiming, "I had no idea that you had all of this information. From the excerpts that you had published, I am concerned by your longstanding knowledge of some very grave facts, which you failed to disclose earlier."

Three lawsuits naming McCarrick as a sex abuser are pending in New Jersey. The most recent alleges the disgraced former prelate ran a sex ring from his beach house in Sea Girt. Other pederast clergy predators would procure victims in an operation overseen by McCarrick, whom they called "the boss," according to the lawsuit.

McCarrick apparently set the tone for his own cover-up as well as that of other sex abusers. In 2002, McCarrick, who was archbishop of Washington, D.C. at the time, said, "I'm saying this; the other bishops aren't. I'm saying zero tolerance prospectively; everybody is on the same page. If this ever happens again, that's it."

Michael Reading, a former priest who experienced McCarrick's odd behavior at the beach house as a seminarian, said, "We knew that you needed to be in favor with the archbishop [i.e., McCarrick], and I was not in favor." As a seminarian in 1986, Reading was invited to the beach house where McCarrick watched him change into a bathing suit and put his hand under it in front of other seminarians when they were at the beach.

Like so many others who either experienced McCarrick's misdeeds firsthand or heard rumors, nobody talked about it. As a young seminarian, Reading said, "I didn't know there was a way to report anything."

But the hierarchy does know and fostered a culture that permitted McCarrick to continue with his misdeeds until hiding it became impossible.

Guess who made it impossible to hid McCarrick's "misdeeds".

John Paul II was a great Pope and man but it is factual that he knew very much of the abuse going on and just kicked it down the road and closed his eyes to it.. It’s been a shame for a long time.

I saw a documentary that bishops were having parties with gay strippers overnight up until the time they were ready to serve Mass. 50 years ago.

Francis is a communist and therefore I don’t even think he believes in God.

and he maybe even willfully pushing along the abuse now. But he is certainly not the founder of it.

I was 8 in 1976 and my father who was born in 1920 told me if a priest ever touched me in a way I didn’t like to let him know.

My Uncle sal went into the seminary in 1940 at a very young age. He went on to become schizophrenic and letters that he had written home documented his abuse but no action was taken. He wasn’t believed

No this problem predates Francis by a tremendous amount of time

Throughout its history the Church has been debased by some vile corrupt Cardinals and even some Popes. There is a special place in hell for these people. The restoration of trust will be difficult if not impossible for many. The Church at its best should be a moral, countercultural beacon for those who find themselves inundated by a depraved, neo pagan culture. Instead it has leaders who are corrupt, agnostic and of course politically correct. BTW now you know why all those bishops and cardinals were too timid to ex communicate pro abortion politicians.

That sentence is the definition of "cognitive dissonance".

You would be surprised to learn there are rumors McCarricks abuse may have reached St. John Paul II. Allegedly.... not confirmed either way. Yet.

Weurl and others are said to have informed Benedict XVI of the abuse allegations....and then finally Vigano Went public with what he had known for a while....cover up was systemic in the Church for decades....

as is found in MANY places where humans are involved....

The sexual abuse coverup exists in Protestant churches as well, Not as public as the Catholic abuse though...
Mormon and Jehovah communities deal with sexual abuse.......
And it can be found in:

The Boy Scouts
college sports
Hollywood
Foster care children
Nursing homes
And recently we learned of the abuse in women’s gymnastics....
Worst of all... sexual abuse coverup exists within our families.....

This is not to diminish the evil criminal acts any abusive Priests who used God to commit their crimes.... they should receive the maximum punishment involved. They will have to face God one day as well. Those who covered up these crimes need prison time as well.

Where there are humans committing sex abuse; there are humans involved in the coverup......

Why would I be surprised?

I'm not surprised at all.

That's another ugly swipe against Archbishop Vigano (again I'm not surprised by you).

He repeatedly reported McCarrick's crimes to the Francis.

He only went public when the Francis refused to take action against the pervert.

You only mentioned Pope Francis....Wasn’t sure...

Yeah I know about the NJ guy.... believe McCarrick abused him.... not so sure he could that close to Pope JP2 For a credible one on one.... without handlers keeping him away.... and keeping the lid on it as yep they had been doing for years.....as they were many other cases.....

Only if the latter are as evil as the former. It's a sad situation.

Face it, Murph. McCarrick was the U.S. golden goose in raising money from unsuspecting Catholics to give to the Vatican. Pope Benecict was the only pope who tried restrain the old pervert, while keeping it quiet.

Who was going to kill that goose?

Same thing is happening right now with Red China.

I don't expect Pope Francis to publicly address McCarrick’s sexual exploits any time soon - if ever.

But until this pope does, I don't want to have anything to do with him regarding my Catholic faith.

To me, he is not a Catholic, but only another aggressive progressive politician supporting anti-Catholic doctrine, and looks scandalous in his papal vestments.

He should be banished back to his “liberation theological” Latin America. Hopefully there will never be another pope from that continent where many, many priests are politically active and homosexually permissive, particularly the Jesuits who shame the legacy of their founder St. Ignacious.
