Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jun 5, 2020 / 03:08 pm MT (CNA).- A Vatican cardinal intervened in an online discussion of racism on Friday to warn that a lack of welcome in U.S. churches is driving young African Catholics away from the Church.
Cardinal Peter Turkson, a Ghanaian cardinal and prefect of the Vaticans Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, made a guest appearance during an online panel discussion on Racism in Our Streets and Structures that featured Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C., along with other black Catholic leaders.
Turkson noted that bishops and pastors from parts of Africa have expressed concern that young Catholics leaving the continent to attend schools in Europe and the U.S. return home having left the Church.
Feeling welcome in some of our traditional churches over here is an issue, Cardinal Turkson said. The students reporting having had difficulty being accepted in Catholic communities, he said, and so they go to where they find fellowship, driven into the fold of Evangelical movements and groups.
The online discussion on Friday was hosted by the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University, and moderated by the director of the initiative, John Carr.
Panelists included Archbishop Gregory of Washington, D.C., the only African-American archbishop in the United States, Gloria Purvis, host of the EWTN radio show Morning Glory, Ralph McCloud, director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and Dr. Marcia Chatelain a professor of history and African-American studies at Georgetown.

But not gay marriage?
You didn’t care.

THAT or child rape.
They’re all hopping on the Racism train they think there will be tons of cash
He was not referring only to black Americans but *Africans* who spend time in the Western world. Many countries in Africa are majority-Catholic countries and either English or French speaking.
The Bishop is saying, many young Africans feel disillusioned and leave for Evangelicalism once they encounter the worldwide Catholic Church.
I lived in Europe recently for two years. African expats are the ones keeping Catholic Churches in alive in some places. Quite frankly. And quite a few were not ashamed to evangelize their white coworkers and students either.
Reality check for Cardinal Turkson... generally speaking, Catholic churches aren’t particularly welcoming... to anyone. It ain’t racism. It’s nothing personal. Most pastors don’t go out of their way to meet the flock. Most parishioners don’t out of their way to meet their fellow parishioners. If you’re looking for friends at church, yes, protestantism may be more up your alley.
Anti-white racism by the Catholic Church is chasing white people away.
JoMa
Cardinal, it could be the pedophilia.
Just a thought.
I wanted Arinze for Pope. He would have been a thousand times better than what we have now.
What does he have to say about:
Francis and Friends are driving some Catholics out of the Church.
Racists, rapists, what’s the difference?
Look at Episcopalians. The white liberal church tried to silence and then broke away from the conservative black churches. The problem is the liberal whites who are the antithesis of the Christian message. Social justice has infected and corrupted too many churches.
There are plenty of black catholics. There are also a lot of African Catholics.
