Reading 1 Acts 20:28-38

At Miletus, Paul spoke to the presbyters of the Church of Ephesus:
“Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock
of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers,
in which you tend the Church of God
that he acquired with his own Blood.
I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you,
and they will not spare the flock.
And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth
to draw the disciples away after them.
So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day,
I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears.
And now I commend you to God
and to that gracious word of his that can build you up
and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.
I have never wanted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
You know well that these very hands
have served my needs and my companions.
In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort
we must help the weak,
and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said,
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

When he had finished speaking
he knelt down and prayed with them all.
They were all weeping loudly
as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him,
for they were deeply distressed that he had said
that they would never see his face again.
Then they escorted him to the ship.

because they do not belong to the world

May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.

INVOCATIONS

Thou who wast a virgin before thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.

Saint John Vianney, better known as the Cure of Ars, when asked how long he had loved Mary, said: "I loved her almost before I could know her." In this prayer he expresses that love.
O thou most holy virgin Mary, who dost evermore stand before the most holy Trinity, and to whom it is granted at all times to pray for us to thy most beloved Son; pray for me in all my necessities; help me, combat for me, and obtain for me the pardon of all my sins. Help me especially at my last hour; and when I can no longer give any sign of the use of reason, then do thou encourage me, make the sign of the cross for me, and fight for me against the enemy. Make in my name a profession of faith; favor me with a testimony of my salvation, and never let me despair of the mercy of God. Help me to overthrow the wicked enemy. The Word Among Us

Today's Meditation: John 17:11-19

Father, keep them in your name. (John 17:11)

What would you pray for if you were facing a painful death? Strength? Peace? The grace to endure it faithfully? Jesus prayed for his friends. He was concerned for what he had begun in their hearts. He wanted it to continue and bear fruit until the day they were reunited with him.

Guess what? Jesus included us in his prayer. He included you! With love and compassion, he asked his Father, “Keep them in your name. Protect them. Consecrate them.”

Keep them: Jesus asked his Father to hold you securely to himself. He will do it! Your heavenly Father will never turn his back on you. He will never abandon you to whatever may come. No one can take you out of his hand. So talk to him about your hopes and fears, your strengths and weaknesses. Spend time in his presence listening for his voice.

Protect them: Jesus knows what can threaten the good work he has begun in you. And so he prayed particularly that the Father would shield you. Amid trials and illness, setbacks and disappointment, God will not only defend your faith, but he will help it to grow and prosper. That’s because it’s not just “your” faith; it’s his life in you. Whatever you are dealing with, you can walk in the confidence of knowing that the Father is with you at all times. This evening, review today’s events. Ask the Holy Spirit to show how he has protected you and helped you grow.

Consecrate them: To his prayers for our welfare, Jesus added another request. He asked the Father to set us apart as holy and dedicated for a specific purpose. He meant everyone, not just the exceptionally talented, outgoing, and naturally able ones. You have been set apart! Your life here is not an accident. It is not pointless or meaningless. It is ordained by God for something only you can accomplish.

Jesus loves you and cares for you. Reread today’s Gospel, and insert yourself where Jesus speaks of those whom the Father has given him. Then worship him for loving you so deeply.

“Thank you, Father, for your love and care. Holy Spirit, help me to grow in knowledge of God’s love, protection, and plans for me.”

Wednesday of the Seventh Week of Easter

Do we know what our mission in life is? Jesus’ mission was to glorify his heavenly Father through obedience to His will. In the Gospel, we see Jesus who has finished his mission on earth and about to return to his Father in heaven.

Jesus’ strength comes from the Father. We who aspire to become disciples of Jesus must pray for strength from the Holy Spirit. As his disciples, we are consecrated in God’s truth and holiness. To “consecrate” means “to be made holy or to set apart for God”. It also means to be equipped with the qualities of mind, heart and character for a task or service. Just as Jesus was called by the Father to serve in holiness and truth, so we too, are called and equipped for the task of serving God in the world as his representatives. God’s truth frees us from ignorance and the deception of sin. It also reveals to us God’s goodness, love, and wisdom. Is our life consecrated to God?

May the Lord, take our lives and make it wholly pleasing to him. May He sanctify us in His truth and may the Holy Spirit guide us that we may follow Him faithfully wherever He may lead us.

"Paul knelt down with them all and prayed. They began to weep without restraint, throwing their arms around him and kissing him, for they were deeply distressed to hear that they would never see his face again." —Acts 20:36-38

When St. Paul knew that he was seeing the leaders of the church of Ephesus for the last time, he had no regrets, for he "never shrunk from announcing to [them] God's design in its entirety" (Acts 20:27).

Imagine the occasion when you will see your children, spouse, or brothers and sisters in Christ for the last time. Will you have any regrets? Will you be ready to meet the Lord? Will your marriage be a magnificent sign of Christ's love for the Church? Will your children be faith-filled Catholic Christians? Will you have impacted our culture with the Gospel? Will you have fully completed God's mission for you on this earth?

Many of us have so much unfinished business that our lives seem hopeless. In this case, the last time we see our loved ones will be tragic unless the Lord does many miracles. This is exactly what He will do by giving us the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost.

If we look ahead to the end of our brief time on earth, we may thirst for the Holy Spirit (see Jn 7:37ff) and desire the fullness of the Holy Spirit more than we desire anything else, even our pleasures. Then we will be getting close to throwing open the doors of our lives to the Holy Spirit.

Prayer:  Father, on this sixth day of the Pentecost novena, may I realize that I am doomed without new life in the Spirit.

Promise:  "Consecrate them by means of truth — 'Your word is truth.' " —Jn 17:17

Praise:  Pope St. Gregory the Great sent missionary monks to England at the end of the Sixth Century. St. Augustine was appointed as their superior and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury.
