That is exactly the distinction I was pointing to. We are obliged not to support false cults. We ARE obliged to protect and defend persons, simply on account of their created dignity as human beings.
This is a teaching of Christianity.
Islam, in contrast, really offers little-to-no basis for a respect for intrinsic, inalienable human rights per se. Islamic jurisprudence consistently posits rights and dignity for the Umma, not for Kafirs.

I am not obliged to believe JP II said otherwise. And it's still on the Vatican's website 20 years later. Why?

An interesting question. If it's indeed "protect Islam," meant in precisely that way (not just "protect these misled
people " but "protect this warped religious
system," --- which I don't accept is what he meant --- but if so, then, "Protect it from what?"
Surely not "Protect it from the kind of historical critical questioning that was applied to it in 2006 by +Benedict in Regensberg"?
