[Catholic Caucus] The Two Popes Problem

Liberals would like Benedict XVI to shut up.

When Pope Francis grants an interview, he makes news by subverting Church teaching. When Pope Benedict XVI gives one, he makes news by upholding it. Therein lies the two popes problem about which the media can’t keep complaining. This last week it ran stories pitting the two against each other after a new book about Pope Benedict XVI appeared in which the pope emeritus defends the Church’s moral teachings and reviews the crisis in the West.

The supposed conflict, though, is mythical, as Pope Benedict XVI is far too nonconfrontational and passive to wage any sort of battle against his successor. Benedict has gone out of his way to soften any differences between the two, even though Pope Francis represents the very relativistic and politicized Catholicism he feared.

If anything, Benedict has cooperated in the Vatican’s propaganda about the continuity of the two popes. And yet liberals outside and inside the Church still want him to shut up.

Would the Jesuits write such an editorial if Benedict were making heterodox comments in line with the “reforms and pastoral emphases of Pope Francis”? No, that would presumably contribute to the “life and unity of the Church,” in their view.

(For Catholics) its more or less proof that there can only be one Pope and he is the Pope for life. The only questionable decision that Benedict ever made was the one where he chose to step down . As far as I’m concerned he is the one true Holy Father. That is how I am able to hold strong in my Faith while that other clown spews his left-wing socialist drivel.

We should all keep in mind that when the history books about this era are written 200+ years from now, it may very well be determined that Francis wasn’t even the real pope.

...He quit and Francis is Pope.

I don’t get it, how does a Pope “quit”?

The fact is Benedict should shut up anyway. It doesn’t matter if he’s right or not. Because there is no such office in the Catholic Church as ex-pope. He’s not even a cardinal or bishop anymore he’s just a priest. He was the one who was a liberal by retiring in the first place.

But he made his decision and now he has no room to complain. He is a nothing and nobody.

He’s the only one in the world responsible for the fact that Pope Francis is now the Pope. He made that decision. It was it terrible decision but he did it anyway.

This is someone who used to be a great admirer of Pope Benedict. He was the one who went liberal, when he turned his back on the church and “retired.”

His decision wasn’t questionable at all. It was immoral and cowardly. But now everyone including him has to live with it.

He doesn’t quit. Up until a certain point every Pope ended up paying for the position with his life.

_______

Depends on who’s writing the history.

I’m wondering if history will show a quiet schism developing since Benedict stepped down, only symbolized by the “two popes problem”, but actually lived out in the Novus Ordo vs the Latin Mass.

I’ve had the same question and I’m surprised that we don’t see it asked more often.
