Beloved Father,
How Precious and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Yesterday we talked about parodies and satire. When teaching piano, I will often write silly lyrics to great classic piano pieces so that the children can learn the melody. Here are some lyrics I wrote for Bach's Minuet in G, from Anna Magdalena's Notebook:

Johann was such a genius
That he wrote ten thousand pieces
Trio-oh-ohs and Duets
Oratorios, and Minuets.
Cantatas by the score,
and lyrics that didn't rhyme
He had eighteen children,
so I really don't know
How he found the time!

Bach was the the Kappelmeister (Music Director) of two churches simultaneously and had to have a fresh Cantata every Sunday and Holiday for both. It was a big job, but he managed. And, on top of that, he gave his wife and children piano lessons!

While reading my very first Bible, I noticed that a lot of the Prophets started their discourse with a sentence like this:

"This is the burden for Babylon (or Tyre, or Egypt, or wherever.)

I quickly discerned that the burden meant the prophecy for that region or people. "So," you may ask, "Why would Prophecy be called a burden? I thought it was supposed to be a GIFT!"

In the first line of Habakkuk's prayer, which is also a SONG, Habakkuk calls his prophecy a burden. It is this Hebrew word that he uses when announcing his song.

Further research on this word shows that it was also the choice for describing the job of Minister of Music, Choir Director, and Chief Musician in the Temple of Solomon. This was an honor and a gift, but also a great burden, because when one is playing music for the King of the Universe, it's GOT to be right!
