Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the 1970 Epic Movie "Waterloo" there is a very effective scene in which the British soldiers sing a mocking song about Napoleon. What makes this scene especially awesome is the 15,000 REAL human beings were actually in the film. There were no special effects or CGI involved. These men were real and their singing was real. Unfortunately, the song they so robustly sang was written in 1821, not 1815, which was the date of the Battle being depicted. (I amused myself yesterday looking up movie bloopers, and this one went with today's Hebrew Word perfectly!)

Today's word, "Mangiynah", is a satirical or mocking song. As a person who has been writing satirical songs and parodies all my life, I was surprised to find this word in Scripture. Here are some rules about satire:

1. It has to be professional-sounding. Poorly-written satire doesn't offend the target, because it is just silly. You-Tube is replete with half-hearted attempts that fall flat because they don't rhyme, don't stay in the meter, or are just plain dumb.

2. There has to be an element of TRUTH. If the satire is so far-fetched that it is just an out-and-out LIE, it just becomes slander and abuse. True satire hits the nail on the head, expresses a truth, and then makes comedy out of it. A perfect example of good satire that exposes truth is The Babylon Bee. Sometimes one can get halfway through the article before thinking "Aha! This is SATIRE!"

3. Satire needs to Exaggerate. Whether it is subtle or over-the-top, exaggeration is a very important part of satire. Sometimes, everything appears normal and then, POW, a punch line with a crazy exaggeration ties the whole satire together.

4. Comedy and Tragedy Finally, satire has an element of tragedy. The famous filmmaker Mel Brooks tackles racism, greed, war, torture, religious persecution, slavery, hatred, and Nazism in his satire, so much so that people feel GUILTY laughing at it.

The satire mentioned in the Scripture appears in the Book of Lamentations, which is arguably the SADDEST Book in the Bible. Lamentations is actually a book of five songs, sung on the occasion of the Destruction of the Temple, and are by Jeremiah. They are long, sad, mournful songs, but are punctuated by a message of hope right in the middle, about the Steadfast Love of God, and His mercies, which are new every morning. God is Faithful, but people are not. In fact, one of Jeremiah's lamentations is that his enemies are singing mocking derisive songs about Israel, and that is the meaning of today's word.
