Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

About 35 years ago, I was the Church Organist for an Inner-City-Bible-Believing Church. We had a large orchestra of mostly novice guitar players, drums, piano, flute, alto sax, and bass. As long as we played the "Old Songs" and I wrote out the chord changes for the guitar players, it was good. Since nobody could read music (including me, at the time), we focused on playing by the chords and just staying together. Somehow, it ended up sounding good. We became known around town as "The Church With The Music", which was awesome, as long as the preaching and teaching stayed within the bounds of orthodoxy. If that wasn't correct, all the music in the world couldn't make it right.

After the service, when all the guitars were packed up, and I was still sitting at the old Hammond B3 Organ, I let loose. All the Israeli dance songs based on Scripture came pouring out. The congregation moved the chairs out to the sides and people linked arms and started dancing. This sometimes went on for an hour. It is a very fond memory of a very lovely time in my life.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
