Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

First of all, I want to thank everybody for their prayers for Paul and his family yesterday. Paul is back home, and I talked with him last night. He is grateful for your prayers.

Today's word for a form of dancing only appears twice in the entire Hebrew Scriptures, and both instances are just a few lines apart in 2 Samuel. (I KNOW it says "1 Samuel" in the opening post. I wish I had an edit feature, but I don't!)

David is bring the Ark of the Covenant to be installed in the tent-like Tabernacle that has been erected on the recently purchased Threshing Floor, now called the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem. The Ark, constructed by Moses according to the pattern given by God, has had a long journey from the Exodus to this time and place.

David can't contain his joy, and dances before it, much to the chagrin of his wife, who is looking out the window in disgust.

There are pages and pages of discussions in the Religion Forum about forms of worship. These discussions often get so polemical that they can be downright nasty. Even though I have been a church musician for nearly forty years, playing everything from Bach Cantatas, to Black Gospel, to Rock and Blues, I NEVER participate in these discussions. People are so passionate about Liturgy and Church Music that it is very easy to cross into sin when defending one's position.

During the Quarantine, I have been able to complete FIVE College Lecture Series online. They were "Gothic Architecture", "St. Augustine's City of God", Great Solo Piano Works", "How to Read Shakespeare", and last but most important, "Sacred Music 700AD to 1900AD". This covered everything from Gregorian Chant , Polyphony, Bach Cantatas, Palestrina's Masses, Handel's "Messiah", Haydn's "Creation", Mozart's Requiem", Mendelssohn's "Elijah" and Gustave Faure's Mass.

What was a real eye-opener was that some of the most beloved Sacred Music (especially Handel's Messiah) was originally conceived and produced as ENTERTAINMENT. I kid you not. And, indeed, most of the aforementioned masterpieces of music are more likely to be heard in a concert hall rather than a church. All of the pieces of music were written in the style of the Era in which they were composed. Palestrina is Late Renaissance, Bach is Baroque, Mozart, Handel, and Hayden are Classical, Beethoven and Mendelssohn border on the Romantic, and Faure is just so...French Impressionist... although he would be very upset if you told him that. This fact can be summed up in one word: "Contemporary". It just means "In the Current Style".

Now I LOVE Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Handel, but am not fond of Haydn, Mendelssohn, or Faure. I love Spirituals and Gospel, but am not fond of "Christian Rap". I like the "Old Hymns" but prefer to play them in a contemporary setting. Although there are some folks who would burn me as a heretic for not liking Haydn or Kanye West's new music, and others who would think me impious for ministering to Bikers with a Blues version of 1 Corinthians 13, it is what it is. As St. Paul said, "I rejoice because the Gospel is being preached."

Once again, thank you for your prayers yesterday, and thanks for letting me rant about my favorite subject.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

I spoke too soon. Now the entire fire department and HAZMAT team are here taking Paul out. Pray for me, please. This is so upsetting.
