Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My birthday in 1984 coincided with the Jewish Holiday of Simchat Torah. I happened to be in Jerusalem at the time, and went to the Western Wall to celebrate. Since "Simchat Torah" means "The Joy of the Torah", the entire plaza in front of the Wall was alive with dancing. It wasn't just ordinary dancing though. It was wonderful, prayerful, joyous, exuberant dancing, and the participants were carrying big, beautiful, ancient Torah Scrolls that were covered with velvet and crowned with gold. It was the most memorable birthday of my life.

This year, 2020, is the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims landing in Plymouth. The State, County, and City of Plymouth have been gearing up for YEARS for this celebration, carefully coordinating with the Wampanoag Tribe to make sure everyone is included in the celebrations. My own family has been very involved in the music, food, and entertainment plans (we have already performed in concerts last year, etc). Now the Quarantine has put the kibosh on everything. The restaurants are closed, the concerts cancelled, and the beaches roped off. The State is in a quandary. This was going to be the Tourist Event of the Century! And yet, Massachusetts is a very liberal state, and has that reputation to protect! What to do?

Well, don't tell anybody, but there is a lone guy on the beach with a battery operated keyboard. He is setting up, playing music, and people are throwing him tips from a respectful distance. We know who he is, but are not publishing his name. What the entire STATE could not accomplish, he is doing.

When the Pilgrims landed in 1620, they faced a brutal winter. Thanks to the help of Squanto, a Native of the area who had been kidnapped, enslaved, converted to Christianity, and then returned to his homeland, the Pilgrims were able to survive that first winter and plant crops appropriate for the New World. Squanto accomplished what the whole state (at that time) was unable to do.

When Harvest time came, the Pilgrims wanted to have a feast based on the Biblical Feast of Sukkot/Simchat Torah. Of course there were many other factors, but this is generally accepted as the origin of our American Holiday of Thanksgiving.

Today's Worship Word, meaning to Feast, Celebrate, and Dance with joy, only appears twice in the entire Hebrew Scriptures. It is, however, based on the root word Hallel, which is also the root of HALLELUJAH!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
