Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Abba Father, We Are in Awe of Your Magnificence!
We Thank You For Your Glorious Living Word,
Which is Not Only a Guide For Living,
But the Very Foundation of our Laws and Our Liberties.
We Thank You For Your Magnificent Word,
Which We Beg You to Engrave Deeply
Upon The Tablets of Our Hearts.
Indeed, Teach us, Oh LORD, and give us a heart of wisdom,
That we may rightly discern Your Will for our lives
in these troubling times.
LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.
We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This particular section of our Devotions based on "Music In The Bible" is a little tricky. Instead of one Scripture reference, I have three, and the supporting information from Strong's is more difficult to code as it has Hebrew Script which goes from right-to-left instead of left-to-right. This poses its own set of problems in HTML, but I am getting used to it. That being said, I appreciate your patience if the Thread is a little later in the morning than you are used to seeing it. And the SPELLING ERRORS! YIKES! Because I am writing so many words in other languages, I have been conditioned to ignore the wavy red line that indicates a misspelled word. Consequently, spelling errors are getting through, but they are mostly in my OWN Native Tongue (English!) OK...I am glad I got THAT over with.
Today's Hebrew Worship Word is well in line with our overall theme. "Zammar" means to "play a musical stringed instrument". In David's day, this would have been a small harp-like instrument called a kinor. According to several passages in the Bible, we can deduce that the kinor had 10 strings, but we do not know how they were tuned.
We do, however, have Ancient Modes that go all the way back to Pythagoras (c. 570 c. 495 BC), and are still in use today. Since David lived long before that, we can't really imagine what his kinor sounded like. However, if you want to hear the Modes, and have a keyboard, do this exercise:

1. Ionian Mode: Start on C, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "C" up. That is the Ionian Mode, and is our Western Major Scale. (Do-Re-Mi).
2. Dorian Mode: Start on D, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "D" up. That is the Dorian Mode, and is vaguely Medieval-sounding. That is why John Williams uses it a lot in his music about spooky subjects.
3. Phrygian Mode: Start on E, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "E" up. That is the Phrygian Mode, and is also called the "Gypsy Scale". Its minor-second gives it a Middle-Eastern Sound and is an important scale in Flamenco Music.
4. Lydian Mode: Start on F, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "F" up. That is the Lydian Mode, and has a raised fourth.
5. Myxolydian Mode: Start on G, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "G" up. That is the Myxolydian Mode, and is has the flatted seventh.
6. Aeolian Mode: Start on A, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "A" up. That is the Aeolian Mode, and is our Western Natural Minor Scale.
7. Locrian Mode: Start on B, and play up 8 white keys till you get to the next "B" up. That is the Locrian Mode, and is extremely weird because of its flatted 2nd, 5th, and 7th.
We do not know if David's portable harp was tuned to any of these modes, or if he used "Chromatic" tuning (the black keys included) or if it was tuned to something altogether different like an Indian sitar. What we do know is that David could sing with joy or sadness, victory or repentance, triumph or lamentation, Praise and Petition, Confession and Exaltation.
Such expression from such a lowly little instrument!

I LOVE the modes. I discovered them when I took on the Hanon Exercise book for piano. Up to the study of scales at number 40, all the exercises are based on the modes. I do all the exercises in the first two books (up to 40) and have them completely memorized. I can actually do them and watch TV at the same time. (LOL...DON’T TELL MY STUDENTS THAT).
The modes are so ingrained in my brain that I can randomly sing them...a useless skill that astonished my bass teacher back in the day. (hahaha)
And...as far as Pythagoras is concerned, he didn’t tell me there was going to be MATH. :-)
